Rocket League is way overdue, we all know that, but honestly I am fully expecting it to arrive with the patch due in September named the 'Rumble Update'. This update will come with a bunch of stuff including a new game mode.

I'm speculating of course, so don't take this as solid confirmation of anything. The evidence is starting to come together though and I will be extremely surprised if Linux isn't released with the Rumble update next month.

Every time Rocket League is updated on SteamDB, the Linux depot is now also updated and this has been true for about two weeks now. This is the single most activity the Linux side of RL has ever seen being pushed into branches on Steam.

Originally the Linux version sat in its own "steamos" branch, but it seems like it has been finally put into their main testing branch named "psyonix". Why else would this happen if not to ready it for release? You can see the named branches on this SteamDB page.

On top of that, the Director of Development at Psyonix tagged me in a tweet about the Linux version recently too:

@darkgallium @RocketLeague @thenaughtysquid We're working on it, can't reveal the date yet

They are still being careful not to give any indicators after their previous failures to get it out.

I'm going to be honest, due to how long we have been waiting my patience for it started to wear thin. Considering how much activity it's seeing on SteamDB right now I am getting excited again! I just hope my own excitement for it doesn't get squashed again.

The game still has a crazy amount of people playing, right now there's around forty-four thousand people playing. So at least we aren't getting the game when it's dead, we are getting a still very popular game.

Quoting: liamdaweSo because a game was delayed, you're just going to completely ignore it? That's such a sad attitude to take.

It's not that the game is one month late and i go full "i hate those guys, let's block/boycott everything from them". It's far from that. I am a professional software developer myself and i know the trouble of releasing software. But if you're one year late – of a potential one day all platform release – i just lost interest. It's not that i actively have them on my naughty list, but if i read one month after another of potential releases and a somewhat poor information policy of the publisher my threshold changes. After all my windows friends played the shit out of this game in the last year and moved on to the next cool shit – i see myself not in the position of a high Likelihood to want this game anymore. It just so happens that i ignore this game now – i just go on – next please ... :( other games catched my attention and my list of "games to play" i have in my steam lib is longer than i have time to play them. I am feeling sorry for rocket league but that ship sailed a long time ago ...

Quoting: sigz@pythoneer, the game hasn't lost interest, there is still 100k+ people playing it every evening. Even if it's released in september the game will be enjoyable.

I never said that. I said, that i lost interest in the game.

Quoting: HoriI don't think it won't have cross-platform multiplayer... they said that they would allow even console players to play together with PC users if it was allowed by the console companies, IIRC...
It is allowed. Consoles players are playing alongside Windows players. Don't know if Xbox plays with PlayStation, but they both play with Windows.

Quoting: liamdaweI can guarantee you it will have cross platform multiplayer :)

Quoting: calexilnow that everyone has moved on and all the major tournaments are done.... good timing
There will obviously be more, lots more considering how popular the game is.

With a guarantee like this I wonder if this article is a little more than speculation.

Quoting: HoriI don't really understand why playing the game soon after release is better than playing it later... I mean, it's still the same game! Actually it's not the same, it's more than that, because it got many updates and they are still improving it.
There's also a lot of people playing it so it's not like you're gonna have trouble finding matches to play.

But you're gonna have huge troubles if you'd like to choose the people you want to play with from your reallife friends. If - and only if they're still into it (which is not very likely after such a long time), they'll be godmasters and matching against them won't make sense anymore.

For people that won't mind playing with strangers it shouldn't matter, as long as no none-linux-successor of the game is released.

Concerning the updates: I wouldn't expect any support at all from dev's that have the linux version on the very very bottom of their priority list. I've seen terrible supported linux AAA releases too often to still be optimistic about that.

I'm still addicted to this game after a year. The linux port will save me many windows boots.

Quoting: pythoneerDon't care anymore. The game was interesting when it was released. Totally lost interest in it – to be honest i really forgot the game altogether and i don't care in the 12th "soon to be released news" anymore. I am throwing my money at people who deliver – not just promising. If they finally release it – i don't care anymore.
I lost my hope for most "soon for Linux games" on steam too and Ill give my money to those who design their games cross-platform like many indie and free software games.

I own the game, but I think his stance is fair. For any product, there is a window. For many, that window is closed. Not his/her duty to actually give it consideration at this point. I don't find it to be a sad attitude at all. To each their own.

Also, I don't think it will ship next month. I'll believe it when I see it and I won't be shocked if the Linux release still doesn't happen in 2016 or if ever. It's not anyone's prerogative to care either way at this point. It's just another game that missed it's window and it has closed for many. We've all seen this movie before, why do we behave as if this is different?

Quoting: ElectricPrismWell since it came free with the controller I'll try it out but my expectations are dirt low...

Ditto.

I preordered the Steam Controller way back when it was announced, but it doesn't look like Rocket League was bundled with that preorder.. Depending on price I'm not sure if I'll buy it if/when it arrives.

It's a bit awkward time now with titles that has been in production the last 3+ years, using Unreal Engine 3. Seems to be a lot of trouble on Linux. I really look forward to when UE3 is deprecated in favour of UE4, since Linux support should be more straight forward, but with development times on modern games it'll take minimum a year before we see the effect of that, and longer before UE4 is the norm. Unfortunately it is no guarantee that we'll see Linux support on all UE4 titles - even if hypothetical everything works with a push of a button, Vulkan and all, there are still developers/publishers who won't release for Linux because it is "non-PC" :P Though thankfully it seems like that mentality is slowly changing.
