A developer of Star Citizen [Official Site] has commented on their forum to state that the game will go with Vulkan and eventually drop DirectX.

Here's what the developer said (source):

This is pretty great for both Vulkan adoption and future Linux support of the MMO. Considering right now it relies heavily on DX11, if they actually do drop that for Vulkan it really does mean they will only be using Vulkan.

Star Citizen itself has been the topic of a lot of controversy, since a great many people think it will never actually end up as a game. I have no real thoughts on that, since big games do take a long time and a lot of money to make, and these guys are doing it in the public eye. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

The bits I've seen look amazing & could probably be made into separate games in their own right, but I couldn't justify spending that much on a single game however good it is.

25 years ago, Monkey Island costed about 100 Deutsche Mark, translating to 50 Euros, inflation corrected to today about 75 Euros. Computer games got very, very much more complicated - and surprisingly cheap. (Of course, none of this is increasing your budget.)

25 years ago they need to release in a cd-rom or disquettes on shops. Make copies, distribution, shopper, etc. Nowdays you can upload it, and with just one click you download. It's the reason the game is much more cheaper.

There's still boxes in the shops - for way less than 75 Euros.

Back then it was much harder to get an update of a game out to people. So the games actually had to be finished. All that extra QA probably cost a few pennies as well.

And these days they don't even sell all the content with it, they can charge extra for making a 'complete' game.

Probably it's just a matter of time, when Elite: Dangerous will be playable in Linux through wine. Either they switch on Windows to Vulkan, or wine supports DX11 good enough to play. Probably the later will happen ;)

The pitiful thing here is, macOS has OpenGL 4.2, and apparently the Horizons expansion requires 4.3+ due to some of the shaders they used. Not sure who messed up there!

But I still don't understand why they would bother porting to macOS at all. Elite is a pretty heavy game, and it is a tiny portion of a tiny portion to get someone with a Mac that could handle it.

I wonder with the PS4 version I'd be able to use my Saitek x52 Pro. I know it works in Linux...

Certainly, 45USD is more than 3/4 of a day of work. It's more than 3 restaurant meal, maybe 4 and if you go cheap, more than 6 meal ! If i eat at home, i could make more than 2 week of foods with this if i wanted...

I would consider a lot more an 20 USD price tag. Specially when we consider i buyed the complete bundle of Civ V on June 2014 for 16.49 USD...

A movie is two hours and costs, what, $10? $3 if you rent?

By that sort of comparison-based logic, as long as you get 4.5-15 hours of enjoyment out of the game, then it's worth it.
