The Steam news just keeps on rolling! This time I can now share the hardware stats from the most recent Steam hardware survey as it includes Linux stats:

Full Stats:

Windows 7 14.70% +0.21%
Windows XP 32 bit 10.44% -0.30%
Windows 8 64 bit 6.59% +2.18%
Windows Vista 64 bit 4.00% -0.94%
Windows Vista 32 bit 3.24% -0.19%
Windows 8 0.62% +0.16%
Windows XP 64 bit 0.42% -0.07%
MacOS 10.8.2 64 bit 1.81% +0.32%
MacOS 10.7.5 64 bit 0.88% +0.16%
MacOS 10.6.8 64 bit 0.83% +0.05%
MacOS 10.7.4 64 bit 0.20% -0.07%
Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit 0.30% +0.30%
Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit 0.27% +0.27%
Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 0.13% +0.13%
Ubuntu 12.10 0.12% +0.12%
Other 0.48% +0.17%

Given that Steam has around 54 million ACTIVE accounts (Wikipedia), 0.8% are now Linux users and properly tracked, that’s around 432,000 Linux gamers using Steam for the open beta. Take those statistics with a pinch of salt as I'm not sure exactly when that 54million number was taken it could be more or less right now, an interestingly high number though.

What will be more interesting is to see how it progresses over time and if they will include other Distro's somehow whether that is a "Other Linux" or by Distro.

It also shows 64bit is far more popular than 32bit, let's hope that Steam can bring us true 64bit client support this year (they are already working on parts towards it). Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

For the sake of completion, I beg to differ. Chances are the "Other" has quite a few other distros in it. So again, we have no proper numbers, but I guess somewhere around 1%-1.1% is a safe bet.

Mmh... Okay. Gotta grab for coffee, this is quite redundant with Bumadar's post. Sorry 'bout that. ^^"

Thanks added Mac to the stats, will be very interesting to watch these stats and see if they grow at all.

A few question about it:
1) Are we talkign about all users or ACTIVE users? Just because I registered 10 years ago doesn't mean I am Windoze user.
2) How dual booters were accounted for?
3) Did wine figures go to windows camp or Linux one?
Liam Dawe Jan 6, 2013
It only counts users who fill it out when it pops up while logged unto Steam so someone who registered years ago on windows and isn't using Steam wouldn't be counted.

For dual hooters - whatever is you fill it out on.

Wine - no idea I think they are counted under what windows version wine is showing as.

system settings with Steam under wine will show Wine also as OS, next to the windows version you put wine at
