Subnautica From The Developers Of Natural Selection 2 Announced

By - | Views: 14,645

Unknown Worlds the developers behind Natural Selection 2 have announced Subnautica an open world, underwater exploration and construction game with support for Linux.

They confirmed this to me via twitter, they will be using Unity so unless they find show-stopping bugs it will be on Linux!

@gamingonlinux @NS2 @UWEDev too early to make definitive calls on platforms, Win/Linux/Mac are first priorities

@gamingonlinux @Subnautica @NS2 @UWEDev I would say... 90% :) We're using Unity, so unless we run into show-stoppers, i'd say Linux is go!

So, what is it?

QuoteSubnautica will combine elements of role playing, sandbox, exploration and cinematic games to create a unique experience, the genre of which we do not believe has yet been invented.

Sounds like it could be pretty interesting, the underwater element should make things interesting that's for sure.

They have released nothing other than concept art and music like the shot below:

Sure does look interesting, if the game is anything like that count me in, you can find more concept stuff here.

Considering their history of supporting Natural Selection 2 so well I have high hopes for this one living a full life after being released.

Anyone else excited?

big fan of this company, specially since they added support to NS2 on linux unlike most companies adding mac support first.

and with how good the graphics for ns2 are, am sure subnautica will be another awesome looking game with a lot of things to do.

Reminds me of the good times with Subculture :)

So they went to the trouble of creating their own engine for Natural Selection 2 only to use Unity in their next game? Perhaps it just wasn't a good fit for this game.

That could be it.  It's also possible that if Unity were like it is now they would have used it on NS2.  It does seem that if it were easy to use the engine they developed for NS2 for this game, though, they would have gone ahead with that.  However, they also might have decided that offloading their game engine development/maintenance burden to a licensor would just make more sense going forward, and decided to move all new material to Unity.
