Supergiant's games have thus far had a few tropes so to speak. The narrator, optional difficulty and a New Game+ mode to spice up future playthroughs. Pyre did away with some of those aspects but the New Game+ is back on the list.
For the uninitiated, Pyre is Supergiant's third game which is set in a world full of people banished for one wrongdoing or another. Your only way to escape this land is by completing a series of Rites to earn your freedom. If that intrigued you, I have written a whole review on the game here.
Today's 2GB update to Pyre brought a couple of bug fixes but along with these more minor changes was the True Nightwing campaign mode which changes a couple of things about how the campaign plays and also requires one previous playthrough before being available. The base difficulty of the game is set to Heightened and you cannot load saves, so you are forced to accept the outcomes of the Rites. And that's not all, for you are now forced to use the Titan Stars, Pyre's mechanic of optional difficulty. The patch notes didn't specify how many of the Stars you need to have active but the wording of "some" would suggest more than one. The game's XP mechanic is also changed, presumably to make it harder for you to level up your party members. Finally, as you might expect, this difficulty mode is permanent and you cannot turn it off in the middle of your campaign.
It's not all about pure difficulty though, you also gain access to all of the items in the market from the get-go, so you are more free to spec out your characters to your liking. You also unlock all of the lore entries in the Book of Rites and all of the music pieces on the White Lute.
And now that we are on the topic of music, the owners of the Pyre Soundtrack also got some cool additions, namely two whole extra hours of music. The new songs included are the "White Lute" versions of the existing tracks and Triumvirate-specific versions of the song Never To Return, so it's not completely new music but it's also completely free for those that got the soundtrack.
You can pick up Pyre on Steam.
