Linux hardware vendor System76 [Official Site] (and now a Linux distribution maker too) have just announced their new Oryx Pro laptop and it's a beast.
They also made a rather amusing video to go along with it:

From what they told me, they've been able to make it more powerful than their last model while also making it thinner at 19mm, with a weight around 4.37 lbs. (1.98 kg.). For those interested in picking one up, they will be giving a choice between their brand new Pop!_OS 18.04 LTS (64-bit) or Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
As for the rest of the specs, have a look at this:
- Processor: 8th Gen Intel® Core i7-8750H (2.2 up to 4.1 GHz - 9MB Cache - 6 cores - 12 threads)
- Display: 15″ HiDPI and IPS display options (4K display only available with the NVIDIA 1070)
- Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 or 1070 (plus Intel graphics to switch between)
- Memory: Up to 32 GB Dual Channel DDR4 @ 2400MHz (8GB base model)
- Storage: 1× M.2 SSD, 1× 2.5″ 7mm height drive. Up to 6 TB total (250GB M.2 base model)
- Expansion: 2× USB 3.1 Type-C, 3× USB 3.1Type-A, SD Card Reader
- Input: Multi-Touch Clickpad, Multi-Color Backlit Chicklet Keyboard

The minimum price is $1,599 and that will obviously go up depending on the configuration. It's available to pre-order now, with shipments expected at the end of May. You can find out more here if you're interested.
I think it's really great that a dedicated Linux hardware vendor is doing so damn well, considering most traditional stores don't offer anything outside of Windows 10. I certainly wouldn't mind one of their units one day, they always look really good.
Quoting: velemasJust use Asus ROG Strix GL702ZC with Ryzen 1700 (8 cores, 16 threads, no Meltdown, no Nvidia blob) for $1499. Runs Arch Linux perfectly.
And how is suspend to ram on that? Last time I looked it's a dice roll when it works under AMD, if at all.

Tbf it's a dice roll on most laptops too so ...
It's never worked on the mrs i3 sammy with a nvidia graphics.
Quoting: gabberQuoting: jasonridesabikeThis is the laptop that's bringing me back to Linux after 4 years of Mac OS. Super hyped. It's not like this is the first decent laptop that gets released..
It's slightly lighter than my MBP, severely more powerful, and infinitely more upgradable. Now I just have to wait until I make my next trip to the US or someone visits me >.<
there is for example this: https://www.pcspecialist.ch/notebooks/recoil-II-15/
you can choose no OS and save 100.- specs look comparable (battery is smaller) to the onyx pro. If you don't care about the support from system 76 you can even shave off another 200.-
For me the most important part is not paying for a windows license i am never going to use.
Oh and the fact I can get the Swiss keyboard, which you can't from S76 (I asked..)
There certainly have been, but I need something powerful, light, *and* well supported. I use my computer professionally and can't suffer driver issues or downtime; I'll pay a premium for good support. Also, I refuse to buy a Dell.
What System76 is doing with Pop!_OS is fantastic and it's the first time in the last ~5 years I'd be willing to bet business on having a reliable Linux desktop machine.

I had this machine for a while. I just wish it wasn't ruined by a "meh" color accurate panel and the dated black/red gamer theme. I don't want to be laughed at while I'm at work.

Quoting: drlambThe 4K option is only available with the GTX 1070. +1 to Ryzen/Vega machines from them.

amen to that. I could never see myself bringing a super ostentatious red and black laptop to a client meeting.
When I bought my current laptop 14 months ago, I looked at System 76... However, I bought a MSI laptop with Winbloat 10 instead. (and completely removed windows, OFC)
I bought a MSI gaming laptop with Intel i7 processor, nVidia 1060 GTX, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD HD, 1TB HD, 1920x1080 15.6" screen and all standard features of most laptops. I paid $1099(US) before a $100 rebate at a local store (so, $999 total). The system 76 laptop had a CD/DVD drive (which is not available on my current laptop) and I am not sure if it included the SSD drive or not... But, for that DVD drive and the System 76 name, it cost $500(US) more, a huge price increase. If it was even close in price, I would consider paying for the priviledge of pre-installed linux... but at 150% of the cost, it was just too much of a premium to even consider. And I would need to install linux anyway because it only came with ubuntu.
As it was, I installed Linux Mint on this computer without a hiccup. Everything just worked except for the webcam... which I didn't notice until 4 months later when I first tried a Roll20 session with my friends on this computer. So the only downsides is that they can't see me, but the microphone works.
Quoting: ShmerlIndeed, no Optimus horrors please. Do they have some laptops with Ryzen + Vega?
I have checked them a few times and I have never seen them offer an AMD cpu, so that is a no go for me. I want a zen apu laptop at some point.
See more from me
