Terraria Officially Confirmed To Be In Development For Linux, Finally!

By - | Views: 12,989
Even though it seemed likely from a developer tweeting a screenshot of Terraria on Linux there was never an official confirmation. Until now that is! The developers are now confident enough to confirm it.

QuoteGreetings Terrarians!

As you know, we have been working diligently over the past 18 months to expand the World of Terraria - both in regards to the scope of the game itself as well as the platforms on which it can be played. It has been simply amazing to watch our community expand into Console and Mobile in parallel with our reinvigorated PC fans.

That said, we are extremely pleased to share the two teaser screenshots below that we hope will finally address a long-desired addition to Terraria: availability for both Mac and Linux!

In full transparency, both of these versions are very much in development, so we cannot make any promises as to a launch date - or even if they will ultimately be feasible - but we wanted to make sure that our long-suffering Mac/Linux fans know that we are working diligently to bring Terraria to their platform!

I can't see a reason for it not to be feasible if they are confident enough to do an official post on it, so that little line is just there for show in case something goes horribly wrong somewhere.

Thanks, spell checker didn't pick it up on the first pass. Chrome is really temperamental with that recently.

With the number of similar games that have come out for Linux, is this even relevant now?

YESS FINALLY!!!
Such a time sink tho lol xD too fun!

Well technically it was the original, and had a lot of content, although I haven't played the newer ones like Starbound.

Great game, awesome news.

Meh, I'm waiting on the next update for Crea instead.

Oddly enough, I find the offering laughable when Starbound is alive and kicking, including Terraria's arse. :|

H E L L Y E Z ! ! !

My girl & me collectively have over 1,000 hours logged in developing a single Terraria map. Since we're exclusively both on Linux we've greatly missed playing Terraria for quite a long time now.

I seem to be infectious as I got 10 friends into Terraria, so this news is like winning the lottery since Starbound is intolerable to play to me - boring, unfun and nothing like the awesome Terraria experience.

Starbound is Decaf and Terraria is Dark Roast Coffee, they may look like the same thing to the untrained onlooker but Terraria is so much better!

Viva Terraria, come to Linux soon my fine Terrian Friends. No more TShock or broken Wine Multiplayer BBY, no more SSH Tunnels for 7777. Viva Redigit.

Quoting: KelsMeh, I'm waiting on the next update for Crea instead.

Also Crea engine will be Open Source, this seems to be their aim:

"Right now the game engine is fairly incomplete, undoubtedly riddled with bugs, and poorly documented. As development progresses all of these will be remedied and, as I said earlier, I want to make these open source. The open source community has made Crea possible and I'd love to give back. It needs to be cleaned up first though, which will definitely take some time."

Well, this is another game I had bought for Windows in my dualbooting days, at least when my Windows installation worked, that is. It'll be good to see it come up in my library. It is a great time sink.
