The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth Releases Today On Steam

Posted by , | Views: 7,587
The remake of the massively popular roguelike The Binding of Isaac makes its début on Steam for Linux today. As previously reported the remake comes with a vast amount of improvements and additions, and a new engine, which should be a major improvement to Linux users.

Originally made in Flash and self-published in 2011, the indie hit and DLC has been available for purchase DRM free for Linux since it appeared in the Humble Indie Bundle 7 in December 2012. After signing with publisher Nicalis, Inc., the game has been remade from the ground up using the publisher's in-house engine. It's the same engine Cave Story+ uses, so it should ensure a great improvement in performance for Rebirth.

The new engine also allows the developer to add a ton of new features to the remake, which were impossible to implement in the original as they were already stretching the limitations of the old engine. Among the additions are over twice the amount of items, a lot of new enemies, more rooms and an all-new asymmetric couch co-op mode.

So far no DRM free purchase options have been made available but this tweet from founder of Nicalis, Tyrone Rodriguez, seem to imply that a DRM free version will be made available.

Official About
When Isaac’s mother starts hearing the voice of God demanding a sacrifice be made to prove her faith, Isaac escapes into the basement facing droves of deranged enemies, lost brothers and sisters, his fears, and eventually his mother.

Gameplay
The Binding of Isaac is a randomly generated action RPG shooter with heavy Rogue-like elements. Following Isaac on his journey players will find bizarre treasures that change Isaac’s form giving him super human abilities and enabling him to fight off droves of mysterious creatures, discover secrets and fight his way to safety.

About the Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is the ultimate of remakes with an all-new highly efficient game engine (expect 60fps on most PCs), all-new hand-drawn pixel style artwork, highly polished visual effects, all-new soundtrack and audio by the the sexy Ridiculon duo Matthias Bossi + Jon Evans. Oh yeah, and hundreds upon hundreds of designs, redesigns and re-tuned enhancements by series creator, Edmund McMillen. Did we mention the poop?

Too bad this time it's not avaliable outside Steam and DRM-Free, like the original.

Well, they'll know I won't buy this one.

Sooo...this game is November's PlayStation Plus "free" game (can something be free if you're paying a monthly subscription for it?) and after watching this little YouTube vid I'm not even sure I want it for free...

PS+ is doing the rebirth version, are they? Good deal. There always was some gems on PS+ back when I had a PS3 and subscription. It was only £35/year when I had it though. Do you pay monthly now?

As for the game, I'll hang fire on this one, despite the excellent reviews. It might be a Christmas purchase for me. We'll see. Looks a little dark for my liking, and I own the original through the Humble Bundle, although I've never bothered downloading it.

Gotta be the worst release trailer ever made. Barely get to see the game, only irrelevant footage of naked people dancing with bags on their heads.

Everyone on this thread must be mad!
This has been THE only game since Halo 3 that I've ever been hyped for.
the original? I played it to death, 100%'d that beast.
This? I am determined to do the same.
If PS+ is giving it away for FREE go get it you wackjob!
and if you ask me the trailer fit very well as someone who enjoys being submersed in this universe.
It's dark, gritty, unforgiving and I love it.
and not buying it JUST because DRM-free isn't available is a real bull excuse if you ask me.

So, anybody bought it and tried the Linux version? Does it run decently unlike the first port (which was completely unusable)?
Daverball 5 November 2014 at 8:52 am UTC
It runs really well, if you want a reference 1001 Spikes is also made by Nicalis and probably on the same engine. I'm actually impressed how well implemented fullscreen, windowed fullscreen and resizing the window to any size is, even though they aren't using SDL2. From how smoothly everything works I would've guessed they're using it.

Agree, the performance of the original release is plain awful.
That's why I never played it for more than 10 minutes, although the
gameplay is really appealing.
IMHO, it would be fair to get a significant discount on the revamped
version, if you purchased the original release.

You did get a 33% discount during the preorder period for owning the original binding of isaac, maybe not what you'd call significant but it's still a fair bit off. You also have to consider that it's not just a remake but it also has a significant amount of new content, more than twice the amount of items the original had together with the dlc.
