The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 On Kickstarter, Funded In No Time

By - | Views: 10,845

Fans of The Book of Unwritten Tales will probably be excited by this one. King Art Games have put up The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 on Kickstarter and it got funded in just over a day!

They are well on their way to the first stretch goal and I have no doubt they will hit at least their 145K second stretch goal.

The game itself is a true follow-on to the first game, with more characters, more music and more animations. Generally what you would expect from a sequel.

I would wish King Art the best, but since they have already hit their goal, congratulations!

The interesting thing about this is that they already have a publisher (Nordic), who have fully funded their game. This Kickstarter is all about improving the game more past what Nordic won't pay for.

The game will be on Steam and also DRM free this year, released chapter by chapter via Steam Early access, so it sounds like it will only be available outside of Steam when all chapters are available.

Yeah, no, King Art games is not going to get any money from me. Their costumer service / bug fixing behaviour is horrible.

For example, there a crash when clicking "Settings" in the main menu of The Book of Unwritten Tales on Linux. The bug has been known for over a year now, with backtraces and solutions (looks like one of the Ogre libraries they ship is broken; replacing that with a stock Ubuntu one from 1.5 years ago works) posted on both the Steam and their own forums. But do they care? No, not a bit.

Quoting: GuestOuch, that’s bad :(. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately it’s not the only case of a non-functional game being sold on Steam. Anomaly Warzone Earth doesn’t even start, Avadon the dark fortress is unplayable for a couple reasons I forgot… (I’d have to try it again to remember what… I remember I couldn’t pick up objects and maybe something else), and there are many other games that are unplayable.
There’s a reason I keep bitching about games without demos… :-/

Edit: actually Avadon seems to be playable. I remember the resolution setting is impossible to change ingame, and I had to hunt down the settings file to change it manually.

Anomaly warzone earth works well on an Ati laptop and Nvidia Desktop (both with binary blobs)

What are you using ?

Weird, I didn't have any crashes on Book of Unwritten Tales, and also didn't have to replace any libraries. That game worked great for me, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the sequel.

I had to use the Intel card to avoid an "end of game" crash that happened using optimus. The completed game cheevo wouldn't fire otherwise!

I think I'm in for this, sometimes I just cant for the life of me figure out what to do next but generally, very enjoyable games!

Bugs aside, I absolutely loved the first game (and Critter Chronicles)!

Unwritten Tales, one of the rares games in my library that I have actually finished.

Looking forward to the sequel.

I had a game breaking bug in game which made the game crash when I tried to get off the balloon, but eventually an update corrected this, and everything worked fine.

Unwritten Tales is thoroughly refreshing in this world where some games take themselves too seriously.

indeed the customer service sucks. I remember having problem with The raven. But the game is really fine, and the video and their arguments caught me. Bought it :þ

I really enjoyed BoUT1, but I am starting to wonder: are they still being fair to their publisher?

I mean they already got funding, presumably based on sales predictions that are now way off because kickstarter backers already receive an edition of the game. Does the publisher get a cut of the kickstarter funds?

It's none of my business actually, but there's another point to it: aren't we crossing the line right here from funding projects that would otherwise not happen into non-refundable pre-sales?

I hope the publisher doesn't get any extra (not sure how you would quantify extra). It could be they get a percentage of all sales, or they get a minimum amount back.

The publisher gave them a certain amount of money to make a game, great. They have a certain expectation of cost and how much they'll project to make back. all great so far.

Now, with this kickstarter, the dev's are giving people a chance to improve a game they might love. The publisher should already be making back the amount it wants so any extra should be gravy for the developer or maybe they pay the publisher off quicker. Everyones happy.

As for the presales thing, it is a concern but if the kickstarter is up front about what it is we are kickstarting then at least people have a choice. Not a bad thing I guess. Don't get me started on greenlight :P
