Just a word of warning, the latest Steam Client Beta has partially broken the downloading and updating of games on Linux.

I noticed it yesterday, as all my games repeatedly said "disk write error", even though the drive has been working perfectly with everything else. I checked on github, and it seems others are having this issue too.

You can force them to eventually download by repeatedly telling it to, and it may eventually do it, but it's damn annoying.

Hopefully Valve can get out a quick fix. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Got this on my ext4 and btrfs drives, but figured the workaround.

Nothing unexpected in a beta, that's what they are for, after all ;)

I got this error last night with downloads to ext4 drive + beta client.

I was just getting prices for a replacement drive.

Luckily I noticed this post.

Thank you Liam.

Quoting: Mountain ManThis would be one of the many reasons Valve does not recommend people use the beta version if you want stability.

And yet they explicitly recommended using the beta version if you have a Steam Controller.

On the Disk Write Error front: I got this error when there was a broken symlink in a game directory. Might be worth checking your Steam folder for a similar issue.

Sadly, I have to say that I also have this "write error". I'm trying to install "the talos principle", and it's difficult. It works sometimes, and then it says error.

It's the beta version, sure they are trying to find the problem. If it where the official build, it would be worried.

They stopped recommending the beta a few months ago but did not announce that as far as I know. They sure did not tell those opted in.
I noticed it when plugging my steam controller in my laptop I usually don not use my controller with that often and did not get prompted for that. Then I checked on my steamos machine and that didn't recommend it either after opting out.

For anyone having this issue, please consider taking the time to post in this Steam Bug Report thread and hope Valve check it in a timely manner..
