It seems NVIDIA are preparing a new driver update that will enable the use of Vulkan without needing X11.

This is pretty nice to see, as it may enable people using Bumblebee to use Vulkan, which is a way of using more than one graphics chip like found in laptops.

It's possible this may also help with their driver and the Wayland & Mir display servers.

This can also be important for a set of systems designed to render stuff and then send the output somewhere else, they probably wouldn't be using X11 at all. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

In theory, you're quite right! But did this ever work for someone in reality? Xserver should also be capable of that. But how to make use of it? Having a gaming server somewhere and steaming games somewhere else would be a possibility. Nowadays that's achieved by redirecting the input but compressing the game to a h.264 video like what Steam does. It really isn't an option to me since it does not feel native at all.

So...in case anyone was wondering, Vulkan can quite happily render to something other than a screen. A file, image buffer, whatever. Actually, Vulkan doesn't even need the concept of rendering - it can be used for compute just as easily.

I suspect the changes being introduced would allow for any non-X11 scenario to benefit however. I am a little surprised though: it should have been this way from the get-go. Anything requiring rendering to a display is actually an extension for Vulkan, not part of core.
