The Nightmare Cooperative Turn Based Roguelike Released For Linux

The Nightmare Cooperative classes itself as a turn based strategic roguelike (I wish more developers used Procedural Death Labyrinth) that looks crisp, but is it any good?

The game may look surprisingly simple when you first load up, but there's a good amount of depth to the game play, so seriously don't let the simple, but nice looks fool you as it's a bloody hard game at times.

It's one of the few roguelike/procedural death labyrinth games were you aren't always alone, as you can on certain levels awaken some friends to battle with you, and they double up as extra lives for when your current character dies you then assume full control of someone you have awoken.

The characters all move together in the direction you choose, so be careful not to send unwilling warriors into battle or pools of acid. You will need to work out the best route for them all to take, and sometimes that can mean sending you character to the stairs one by one as you stick your others behind a wall for safety.

Your characters only ever have two abilities which is their main weapon were you simply walk into an enemy to hit them, but be warned they hit you right back, so that is where the tactics come in, as you need to be rather careful about that. You can also pick up bottles of mana to use your special ability, and each character has a unique ability which is somewhere else that the tactics come in.

The abilities system is actually quite tricky to use, as for example the healer needs to be right next to a character to heal them, and sometimes getting them together is tricky to near impossible to do, so there are many little layers to this game that make it interesting to play.

The longer you play a single area it also seems the more acid pools appear, so be sure not to hang around too long as that can prove fatal when an acid pool appears right next to the stairs.

It doesn't feel too punishing when you die either, so unlike games like Dungeons of Dredmor you aren't overcome with utter grief when you die, but rather you want "just one more go".

Overall I think it's a fun game that leaves you to figured most things out, so don't let the cute graphics fool you into not buying it as I enjoyed it.

Check it out on Steam now, as it's on sale too so grab a bargain. Remember to check out our Sales Page for more cheap games.

About
The Nightmare Cooperative is a strategic roguelike where you lead a group of unlikely comrades through some rather difficult situations. Your village has fallen on hard times (due to some rather reckless spending by the Village Council) and it’s up to you to bring back some gold. Or even just try and survive for a bit.
