The Open Source Game Corner, Highlighting Open Source Projects Part 2

By - | Views: 39,792

The second part in my articles on giving some limelight to open source games and engines, this time I have a completely different set to show you! See part one here where I highlight 18 different projects. Here's another truck loads of projects to have a look at, especially if you haven't been around Linux for long.

Each open source game corner will show you different open source games, I will be keeping a list so I never show you the same ones twice! These lists came up because some people in our IRC didn't think we covered open source enough, so here's the solution!

Freespace Code Project
Freespace 2 is my all time favourite space-shooter and the fact that it has an open-source engine is just AMAZING. Freespace 2 has a good story and with the upgraded assets I still think it looks great today. The process is a little rocky since you will need to obtain a copy of the game from somewhere like GOG.com (hooray I feel okay linking to them again!) and use wine to get the data from the installer.

Stunt Rally

What about Mandate and GAE in the Glest category? Oldstyle Glest is way behind MG, GAE, or Mandate in their respective focuses.

I've played some UQM lately. The controls are a bit clunky, but the alien races you meet in your travels are quite awesome to make up for it.

Quoting: PCCSunriseWhat about Mandate and GAE in the Glest category? Oldstyle Glest is way behind MG, GAE, or Mandate in their respective focuses.

GAE had no changes for months now. There is absolutly no forum activity, so I think this project is dead. GAE still has no working multiplayer and so on, its more some kind of techdemo than somehting ready to play in my opinion.

The Mandate Engine is a one person project based on GAE. Like GAE its not a game( yet), just an engine and I think its VERY experimental has no working multiplayer and so on. I think it focuses on completly different gameplay in the end.

So both projects are really nothing for players looking at their current state.

Quoting: liamdaweThings don't need to be in 3D or look realistic to be good-looking.

Also coders are easy to find, graphics artists aren't.

One of my best friends is a graphics artist, but I don't know of any open source game projects where she would fit in. She's a 2D artist not a modeler or animator, and doesn't particularly care for sci-fi or dark/violent themes. For work it's typical website stuff like logos and backgrounds, but as a volunteer she does cool cartoony posters with penguins for my Linux group, and for fun has also done some nice painterly still lifes. Has been using inkscape and gimp for years now, after I converted her to Linux based on the high cost of Apple + Adobe.

Any suggestions of a team where she might fit in, if graphic artists are in demand?
