For those who've been wanting to play Black Mesa, the fan-made recreation of Half-Life you're in luck as Crowbar Collective put up a Beta for Linux users.

For me, previously, the game just wouldn't launch since one of their recent updates. If you now opt into the "public-beta" on Steam, it should work once more. Really great to see Crowbar Collective get serious about fixing issues in their Linux build!

Full details here.

In regards to finally getting the Xen content update out, their Summer Update post talks about some really promising details. They're undergoing some external testing now, with most of the art being complete now.

It's going to be very interesting to play through to completion, since I did enjoy Half-Life myself, but like others I wasn't keen on the original Xen sections.

The game itself is also on sale with 60% off on Steam right now.

It's been broken since they introduced the Xen updates, I tried it the other day and all I got was a black screen. So it's nice if they've actually fixed it in this beta. I might give it a test this weekend.

I've been holding out on playing the game from start to finish until they completed Xen. It's been a long wait, but finally looks like we are going to see the finished product :D.

I was getting Out of Memory errors, black textures, and also I've seen light sources through textures. Wonder it that's fixed as well

Come on Xen!

Please tell me that's not a jump pad. Do they intend to remove the long jump module?

I really hope not, especially if their reason is the very insulting "too complicated for players" line. Do they also gimp other parts of the game too and try to make it easier? It's honestly not even that difficult of a game. If so then I hardly think this remake could be worth my time.
I hope I'm wrong though. Or maybe I'm just taking it too personally as I really love the GoldSrc engine with all its features, games, quirks, and bugs.

I have the same issue with my RX480 and mesa-git. I just bought the game in the hope it would finally work now :-(

The public-beta seems to only start if I add the launch option "-dev" in Steam. I still got the out of memory error with a crash off the game afterwards until I reduced all video settings to low. With this the game is playable, but graphically it doesn't look nice. Better than nothing, I guess.

Update: Dynamic Shadow Quality seems to be the cause for the out of memory error and the crash. If disabled, I can increase all the other quality settings, but the game requires still the "-dev" launch option to work.
