There's now a Linux build of Unity 2017.3, with a new installer

Unity 2017.3 is now available on Linux and it comes with a fresh install experience to match the Windows & Mac versions.

Speaking on their official forum, Unity developer Tak made the post. In there they explained that the Linux build of Unity 2017.3 now uses their "download assistant" to have a much more unified approach across all platforms that the Unity editor supports.

The developer explained further, that this gives developers using Unity on Linux a chance to grab assets, example projects, and documentation at the same time instead of resorting to the asset store — handy! It also allows you to install only the components you want, so you don't end up wasting space.

I think it's fantastic to see such a popular game engine continue to get better on Linux. We don't just need games, we need the developers too. Having a developer be able to test their games directly on Linux, with a native Unity editor will really help.

The fact that 2017.3 is still in the development stages and it already has Linux builds being pushed out is a rather healthy sign.

I have been using Unity Editor on Linux over a year and it is currently very stable to use. First versions crashed a lot but haven't been able to get it to crash with latest versions. I've made two android games and released them on Google Play so atleast you can make and publish games with it :)

So far I have been impressed with unity for Linux. I have been using it from the first Linux release. It has worked just as well as the windows version and I have yet to have a crash even after hours of work. Though I have yet to actually compile a game, so that may still be an issue. Sadly I don't have an example to show as I am still getting used to the whole oop thing and am still trying to get the basics working, like health and inventory before moving on to a playable game.

Though don't take this post the wrong way, I am in no way a pro developer. I mostly tinker and hope one day to release an actual full game. Most of my programming experience was in the dos days on quickbasic 4.5. To have had unity back in those days would have been NICE! See kiddies when I was young you had to code your own engines! :P

Back in my day you had to run Ibm's Basica or GWBasic. Then again even that was after I started with basic on the Commodore Pet, Vic-20, c-64, then Apple ][. (and yes, in that order too...)

So old that Lord British was barely a squire. (not quite)

I remember doing experiments in QBasic 4.5 with code available in specialized magazines...
My last incursion in the programing was with PASCAL language.

Yes, they have made the Linux Editor essentially as usable as the Mac/Windows version. Great job to the Unity Linux Editor team!

I don't know why Unreal Engine team cannot make, at least, a simple installer for Linux customers. Unreal Engine team should take a note on that amazing work from Unity team.

Possibly because look at the number of Linux titles that were made in Unity now look at the number of Linux titles made with Unreal there is your answer hundreds with unity 2 with unreal 4
Instead of using Unity I prefer to wait for Godot :)
