The developers of the tactical war-game Ultimate General: Civil War [Steam, Official Site] have stated that there will be a Linux version.

In a rather simple and straight to the point reply the developer said:
QuoteWe will provide Linux version later.

It's worth noting that their previous game, 'Ultimate General: Gettysburg' also supports Linux.

It's a pretty feature-filled strategy game, where you may end up commanding thousands of units on a large map. It looks awesome, and it's been well reviewed by users on Steam.

What I like about it, is there attention to the details. They have tried to make the landscapes look as beautiful and accurate as possible to the real locations.

I think it looks damn good, so I will have to check it out when it arrives for Linux. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I tried 'Ultimate General: Gettysburg' back at the time but the micromanagement killed me. The first few missions are manageable enough but once you have 20+ units at your command the game becomes a clickfeast. I hope they will correct that in this game.

I enjoyed Gettysburg a lot. Will definitely pick this up. Glad they are continuing with this design. Hope to see more like this. Napoleon?

So is this a grand strategy game that covers the entire Civil War? Because that would be awesome.

This is from the gane description:

Innovative command system: You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

I would not say its a "grand" strategy game. It is just battles or scenarios. It is a lot lighter than Paradox games or even Civ in my opinion. No empire building, or moving armies on a large map, just battles. In Gettysburg the armies are predetermined and you must win or loose then move to the next scenario. But this game does add some depth compared to Gettysburg.

I have Gettysburg, and it's one of the best real-time strategy games I've ever played.

But I see what you mean, this new game doesn't have the nation building and politics of a grand strategy game. It still looks great, though. I like the prospect of more simplified unit control. Just depends on how good the AI really is.

That's why it is a tactical war game, not a strategic one nor it tries to be one. What it lacks in scope it makes up in depth.

Don't get me wrong Gettysburg is fantastic and I will definatly be picking up the new one. I agree its a tactical war game, and a damn good one. When I first picked it up I was a little dissapointed to learn it didnt have nation building, politics side of things. But once i started playing the battles are very well done. Easy to controll but alot of depth in a great looking and sounding package.

Altho I believe they have added some army building in the new one in between the battles as well as supply management.
