Underworld Ascendant for Linux to hopefully be at the end of June

Posted by , | Views: 5,909

OtherSide Entertainment have given out another update on Underworld Ascendant with a big update due soon.

They've been working on Update 4, the contents of which aren't entirely clear. From what I've been able to gather from various updates they've been working to add in new characters, additional areas, new quests, possible UI improvements and a better start for new players (lots said it was confusing).

In the latest update posted yesterday, they said this about Linux support:

Mac and Linux?
Following up from my post in April, our external Mac and Linux porters have been taking a swing at UA for the last month or so once the work for Update 4 has slowed down. Mac/Linux release should still hopefully align with our Update 4, which should release before the end of this month. If not, we expect it should release a few weeks after Update 4.

I'm interested to give it a go, although it's worth noting overall it hasn't really reviewed very well. In fact, some reviewers sounded pretty harsh about it but it's had numerous updates since a lot of reviews were published. Perhaps Update 4 will help turn it around? Will have to wait and see.

Available on Humble Store and Steam.

A mediocre game from a thousand years ago, out now soon on Linux!

... but if the sales are low, we'll never make anything for Linux again!

That's the understatement of the year so far It has a metascore of 37. Thirty-seven. I don't think I've ever seen a game with a lower rating, ever. It is slaughtered by the reviewers, to such an extent we should be positively surprised if it's even playable.

I need to read the reviews to judge if the issues are at all fixable in later patches (bugs should be, content issues and design issues are not neccesarily that easily fixed) but at the very least read'em before you buy, folks.

Eike... but if the sales are low, we'll never make anything for Linux again!

Exactly.

It already got some major updates, fixing many things. I haven't played the game yet, but I don't think the 37 are accurate anymore.

I've been rooting for this game to come to Linux and also for it to be decent. I played some of the early Ultima titles, e.g. UW 1, UW 2, Ultima 7 and was blown away by Underworld back in the day. I've taken on board the various reviews and watched game play videos, and with the Update 3 it does appear that some of the bad things have been addressed.

It's probably fair to say that if it comes to Linux, up-to-date reviews continue to be reasonable, and it is available on discount, then I'd get it. Expecting it to be relatively mediocre, but still good enough to enjoy.

Even though the reviews are not that good I will still check it out.

I think Fallout 76 is still way lower

All I know is what I heard from a Youtuber called Razorfist. He's maintained that the game has gotten better since launch and that people are hung up about it being bad from launch. I'll probably give it a world eventually.

52 - and that is scandalously bad. Puts this rating into perspective.

... It may have improved (to be honest, with so bad games it usually doesn't take much). But has it improved up to a decent level, say comparable with games around metascore 70? Cause really, life is too short to play bad games when there's plenty better games to waste time on.

Here's a thought. They (various developers) are more than welcome to release buggy pieces of crap on Windows, to then later release a properly patched / fixed version for Linux

This game did that, and it seems Bard's Tale IV is doing it as well. I do find it odd that they had to get a third party to do the port. I backed this game, and have been following the thread on Steam where Liam asked on the progress (thanks for that!)

Wow that is way to much for fallout. It would deserve a ~10 or something. Guess Bethesda payed some ppl to get up to 52.

No game obtain an average score of 10 after tens, or even hundreds of reviews. That's borderline impossible from a statistical point of view.

And most games have something for both sides of the scale - and the ability to weight those components is what separates professional reviewers from amateurs.
