Unity3D has plans to support Vulkan in the next quarter

By - | Views: 18,246
Google is currently doing their big I/O developer conference today and Unity developers are attending. It seems Vulkan is firmly in their sights.

I first noticed it from a tweet, but when asking for further clarification I was linked only to a feature request to support Vulkan which didn't fill me with hope.

It seems it's true though, as Gamasutra has also now confirmed the news as they have been watching it as well, to quote them:
QuoteHe went on to note that Unity plans to launch support for OpenGL successor Vulkan next quarter.

Pretty exciting news. Mainly due to how many developers use Unity, which is rather a lot.

Details are pretty light right now, since it was only just announced, but I will update you on any new information I get.

Remember though, not many developers tend to upgrade their previous games to new Unity versions, so the amount of games using it will slowly build up. Vulkan also isn't a magic fix for Linux performance, but it should help somewhat.

I was wondering how long it would take Unity to actually confirm they will be supporting Vulkan, since they are part of the Khronos group now. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

About damn time! :)

Vulkan will help small indie games to run better on Intel graphics. It might be a huge boon for Steam Machines.

Seeing how critical Epic Games has been of Microsoft lately, throwing their weight behind Vulkan should be a fairly natural thing for them to do.

Vulkan would be great in KSP...

Don't hold your breath guys.
Unreal's Vulkan support is only available for Android right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if Unity build it for the Google's platform first.

Untiy3D developers were at vulkan talks frequently, were even showing demos of unity3d running on Android using Vulkan, so being at the IO is no big surprise, and that they're going with the google path for Android isn't surprising either.

No mention of support for PCs though, but it's a clear goal for Android.

I don't get my hopes up, but once they have vulkan support, the way to support it on PC platform / Linux/OSX/Windows may not be that far away.

Android for now is the most important Vulkan platform with the most benefit so worth more experimenting first there. But in the long run not synchronizing vulkan support on other platform is just nonsense so of course Vulkan will soon come to all supported platforms.

None should thank google for Vulkan. It's not a secret that they endorsed Vulkan quite late and that's because:
1. They realized that the alternative will cost them a few billions (in patents).
2. The alternative will cost in time (sort out patents).
3. The got pushed back by most GPU vendors.
