Just as an update to our previous article talking about Valve's new VR headset the Valve Index, I contacted Valve to get some bits cleared up.

As we saw from the accidental store pages going live for Valve's new VR kit, there was a "SteamOS + Linux" system requirements section. After speaking to Valve's PR person Doug Lombardi, they simply said "Yes on Linux support." which is pretty exciting to know we will see same-day Linux support!

Additionally, Lombardi told me they will be targetting May 1st for pre-orders and a full announcement, along with the "Knuckles" controllers which are now just being called "Valve Index Controllers".

The one thing that isn't final is the shipping date, the leaked store page mentioned June 15th but Lombardi said to me they're still "finalizing the targeted day in June to begin shipping units to customers".

I don't know where it is build. Doesn't really matter. The Steam Controller as well as the Steam Link were shipped from the Netherlands when ordered from the Netherlands.
So there is not extra tax.

NeptNutzThis is the wide blue ocean where PC belongs. No, it's probably not cheap. Then again, PC has never been cheap.

I saw a PSVR in the Best Buy the other day and almost laughed. $350 for THAT???

If only they could get rid of that damned umbilicus! Nothing breaks presence faster than that little snake crawling up your back. What happened to the VIVE Wireless Adapter cobra-looking thing?
Ha. While playing Elite Dangerous it makes me feel like it is part of the life support system keeping me alive.

Do you play ED on Linux in VR? Care to explain what is all needed? I don't have a VR set, but had the honor at a friend of mine, though that was on Windows. I've kept an eye on VR since then but haven't found any good info what the current state of VR on Linux is.
I wish, the launcher uses some .NET stuff, from what I understand and no one has been able to get it to work under Wine. Though I haven't checked in a while with Proton. I'd definitely spend more time playing it if I didn't have to reboot into Windows though!

Actually with some manually work ED runs pretty good on Proton 4.2.

Interesting, anyone try it in VR? With a Vive Pro? Would be nice to get a 'Platinum' rating. I think some people misunderstand the ProtonDB (and hence WineHQ) ratings. Platinum means you can install it and have no issues, and not have to do ANY work around.

I was trying to play assassin's creed origins the other day, and some had given it a Platinum rating... then went onto list some tweaks you had to do, but didn't really describe how to do them (I think it was 'disable Uplay overlay' I was onto doing something else at the time, so didn't test it. But that should make it a Gold rating.

Amazing!

<rant>The experience with USA based assembly is pretty bad. Look for instance at openpandora. Or more near experience, once you sign the contract, the nice guys go away, and you get backstabbed by the real company.
Chinese and Korean companies are so much more reliable in that respect. No niceness facade, if you pay it is ok. They will also say how much, and they will help you.</rant>

So this is yet another surprise: Valve really invests into it's mother country's economy. Respect!

Yeah, people tend to rate their enthusiasm instead of the actual game compatibility.

Ha, well maybe I'll have to try to put forth some effort in getting Elite: Dangerous working under Linux, then to see if I can get it working under the Vive Pro.

Been a while since I logged in, it's the type of game that takes you away from reality enough that by the time you're ready to stop playing, it's been many hours later and you realize you haven't eaten that day...

Exactly. I've seen a lot of people list Platinum, then go on to say 'add command parameters here' or 'Get this patch from github' etc. That should instantly lower it to Gold.

It's also fun for ProtonDB to have a ton of reports, but all of them give anything from broken to Platinum, but at least they also show Distribution. I think some simply fail because there are some libraries some distributions install by default where as others do not, so it's a simple fix of installing a library. Does that break the Platinum because some distributions might need this? It'd be nice if launching something via Proton would warn you that you're missing a library for sure. Wine usually does if you run it via command line.

I totally missread your post and thought I had to correct this. :-D
