Valve just put out another (smaller) Steam Play beta version

Posted by , | Views: 10,534

Valve are moving quickly based on feedback during the beta period, with Steam Play's Proton now having a 3.16-3 beta available.

Compared to previous releases, it's quite minor. Here's what's changed:

  • Fixed debug DXVK, again; same issue as originally fixed by 3.7-2 (DXVK DLLs compiled in debug mode). This surfaced again with their new build system.
  • Enabled more optimizations and instruction sets for Wine.
  • Minor alt-tab fixes for Unreal Engine 1 games.

See the changelog here.

I'm really quite excited to see where they take it. Especially when they roll out showing something about it directly on store pages for games in their whitelist. It's definitely going to be interesting to see how they're going to show this.

As mentioned before: To enable the beta, you need to go into Steam's main settings, locate the Steam Play section in the left panel and choose it from the dropdown box. You do not need the Steam beta client. You may need to restart Steam to get it to actually show up.

By the time I get around to actually playing some games seriously in Proton, I imagine it's going to be incredible. Thinking ahead, I can't imagine how far it's going to progress a year from now. It's going to be a very different gaming world for us.

Ps. It's also nice to know they're reading your comments here.

mylkaor never like ubisoft games with their stupid uplay client
i can live without EA games, but i like far cry, watch dogs and assassins creed. i hope valve has a solution for this problem, or ubisoft stops being a pain in the ass and removes this nonsense

Valve should never have accepted the presence of the Uplay software client, this is duplicate with the Steam client for the same functionalities (success, overlay, discussions etc ...) and it consumes twice the resources.

skinnyrafHave we leapfrogged the year of Linux on the desktop and jumped straight into the year of Linux VR?

Well Linux-native VR titles (both OpenGL and Vulkan) worked for quite some time, we even maintain a list here: https://gitlab.com/yaomtc/VR-on-Linux

Now, Windows VR games are another story. So far, these are running fine for me (or have been a week ago):
- Beat Saber (is on the official Proton compatibility list)
- Star Trek: Bridge Crew
- Star Wars Droid Repair Bay
- Far Space VR
- Budget Cuts
Where I work, I really wish Budget Cuts wouldn't run.

coolboberThanks but still no luck for me...

Sorry to hear that. What links have you currently set?

Links:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgnutls.so.30.14.10 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgnutls.so.26
and
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/i386-linux-gnu/libgnutls.so.30.14.10 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgnutls.so.26

I am not sure if it's a proton issue. A lot of people on windows can't login as well, however from windows VM I can login without any issues.

Anyway THANK YOU for your help!

Those do look right. Only other thing(s) comes to mind:

1) Somehow that game isn't using the Proton 3.16-3 beta version (check in Steam Play settings, maybe you need to set "Use this version instead of a game-specific version).

2) There might be another libgnutls.so.26 in Proton's/Steams? lib/ directory, or somewhere else on the system and it gets picked up first

I do intend to buy and test more games shortly, but it's looking *very* promising at the moment!

BUdget Cuts works fine for you? You tested it some levels or just the very entry of the game? I don't see any robots when i try to start the game and comparing it with the spcr.netlify.com-database i am not the only one.

I'll have to check again, I'm not sure now.
