It seems there was a bit of a woops with the Beta release of Valve's new Steam Play system Proton, which is now fixed.

This issue on GitHub from the creator of DXVK mentions that it was left in "debug mode rather than release mode" and that could cause a performance drop of up to 50%. This is what a Beta test is for of course, so they can find issues and see where they need to improve for more releases. It should just update when you go to launch a game with Steam Play. If you've been running Steam for a while, you can restart Steam to be sure.

Since I updated to the latest NVIDIA driver today with 396.54, I tested Doom out once again and it does run smoother than before. The newer NVIDIA driver does have a performance fix for both OpenGL and Vulkan, an issue that was introduced in the 390 driver series.

Also, I put up a video where I ramble for a bit and show off some Doom:

I will have a much longer article up in a few days with thoughts on both sides of the coin. It's a complex issue, but it's still rather exciting right now.

I had Tomb Raider: Last Revelation running for the first time, and Tomb Raider 2 was working, but kept randomly pausing for a second or two mid-gameplay. Here's hoping that was the problem!

How do I use Steam Play to play Windows-only games? Does it only start (not necessarily work) for officially approved games? I've got the Steam client Beta running on Linux (fedora) but don't see an option to start Windows games. Nor do I see icons that indicate a game is Steam Play compatible (I looked at Doom and Lego Marvel's Avengers and there's not Steam Play icons anywhere to be found).

Make sure you close it and open it back up to see if there are any updates. I think someone else mentioned they had to disable the beta which will restart it, then enable the beta again.

Maybe I'm going to be the first that dares to add the Windows steam library location, it's trying to sync things, hopefully this doesn't blow up in my face

Edit: Looks like it still does the stupid thing where it re-downloads the entire thing...

Apparently it doesn't play nice with NTFS so they may not run. Someone posted mount options for his ntfs partition somewhere (in the main steam play article maybe?) that helped with games on ntfs partitions not working

Got it to work with non-supported games by going to Steam -> Settings -> Steam Play then "Enable Steam Play for all titles".

Still not seeing the Steam Play icon on games, though.

Hope this helps.

I fixed my issue with Doom having black screen/no sound on launch. Not being sure what the exact problem was (I was pretty sure it wasn't my GPU driver, 396.54, as Liam had it working with it just fine), I decided to throw everything I had at the problem with one command:

sudo apt install vulkan-utils libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386 llvm python2.7 python-pip

And I don't know what specifically in there fixed the problem, but it fixed the problem, game runs fine now. Played some Doom COOP SnapMaps with a buddy of mine. Great fun!

Sysinfo:

Mint 18.3 MATE
Intel Core i5-4690
GTX 970 w/ 396.54 Proprietary Drivers
16GB Ram
512GB SSD

Hope this helps others who may have had the same issue as I.
