Verdun, WWI FPS, Exits Early Access & Heads For The Trenches

The squad-based World War I multiplayer FPS Verdun is finally out of Early Access after around a year and a half of development. The game launched with a brand new map and a roadmap for future content.

I previously shared my thoughts about Verdun when it was still an Early Access title. Since then, the game has continued to add both polish and content and is undoubtedly in a better state than it was before. Off the top of my head I can cite of the overhauled weapon sounds, changed loadout/unlock system, general performance increases and gameplay balance as the most obvious examples.

The new map is a very welcome addition; Aisne was where the infamous trench warfare of the Western Front really began. It's interesting to see a map that's comparatively untouched by war with only crudely-made earthworks scarring the terrain. Teamwork is as important as ever to take defensive lines and I had a blast getting to know the new map.

Along with the launch, the developers have laid out a roadmap for the future of the game. They promise additional free content updates with new maps, a new gameplay mode, realism focus and new types of squads (including much-requested Belgians and US forces). Given their track record of providing updates every couple of days throughout their development process, I suspect it won't be long before at least some of this new content makes it into the game.

I originally bought the game on a whim and didn't expect much from it, as I generally have low expectations of Early Access titles (to the point where I don't buy them anymore). The developers won me over, however, with multiple performance increases and the tackling of a few Linux-specific issues. I'm glad to see that this game was a development success story and that we finally have a fun WW1 shooter.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

The game performs pretty rubbish all around in my testing of it, graphical glitches too sadly.

I am also experiencing bad performance right now. It didn't used to be like this. Perhaps I should install it on Windows to see if it is OS specific.

Maybe they broke something with nvidia? Right now with mesa on my 7870 with settings on mostly medium it rarely dips below 30 FPS with an average of mid-to-high 30s and a high of 50. Which isn't impressive but it's good enough for playing. I used to get graphical glitches with broken textures on some levels in the terrain but they fixed that a while back for me.
