Village building god sim 'Rise to Ruins' had an absolutely massive update

Posted by , | Views: 3,995

Rise to Ruins, a village builder that mixes in some god sim fun just went through a bit of an evolution with the latest patch, which really is absolutely massive. In terms of file-size the patch was relatively small, but good things come in small packages!

The "World Update" released a few days ago adds in many new game mechanics and tweaks some older mechanics in big ways. For starters, it has introduced a god perk system. Every 5 days that you spend in a region, you will be given a reward chest with a random perk. You open them by obtaining "god experience" which you earn through normal play. These perks are persistent unlocks across your profile too!

There's also goals to work towards, unlocking a goal will reward you with god experience and completing the goal will unlock a perk as well. In addition, you can now actually finish the game by surviving one year in every single region.

If that's not enough for you, there's a new migration system which allows you to send people from one village to another. You now only get free villagers and resources on your first region, making expansion more interesting and dependant on how well you do in your starting point.

Also included are tons of AI improvements, a save rollback system for corrupted save games, a borderless fullscreen mode, the mouse is now a hardware cursor, loads of balance changes and bug fixes.

Find it on itch.io and Steam. It's 50% off on both and it's ridiculously worth it. One of my favourite indie games, one I happily follow and play regularly. Note: It's currently in Early Access.

Confession: The amount of times I wishlisted this game..and then removed it after a wishlist-clean up is unbelievable. I think I have to finally check some gameplay videos and give it a chance. There is obviously a reason I keep wishlisting it..

It might be useful to state somewhere in this article that the game is still in development and not released yet.

I'm interested in the game, but I'll probably wait until it's released myself.

I played it ages ago (around InDev 15-ish I think), and it was fun enough. Clearly it's changed a lot with multiple villages and a lot of new/different mechanics. Every now and then I look at it and wonder if I want to re-install and give it another try, but I never do in the end.

Even back then, it seemed like a game that needs a really robust tutorial. Anyone who's been keeping up, does it have that? And how's the balancing of the enemy monsters? It was a little lopsided back then in favour of the monsters.

In my defence it did have the EA coloured tag. Have added an extra note.

If you are waiting for this to be finished to buy it, I think you are a bit foolish only because you may end up spending much more than you need to. This game was "complete" well over a year ago. What I mean by that is if you bought it 18 months ago, you would have already gotten tons of enjoyment out of it. At no point have I been unhappy with the features and felt I was playing an unfinished game. It's a work in progress, but it isn't broken or lacking in any way.

It's $5 on Steam. I would happily pay $50 for this game. It's utterly delightful and has given me more enjoyment than any game in my library save for Rimworld.

One bit of warning however - if you are into city-builders/god-simulators then this game is addictive, and I don't mean in the sense of "oh, it might be a fun way to kill a few hours" but rather "oh, look, where did 650 hours of my life go" (seriously, that is my steam time on this game for this year).

One major feature of this game is that each region gets progressivly nastier the longer you stay in it, but the longer you stay in a region the more resources you can hand off to the nearby regions you expand to.

And the "survival"-mode is aptly named, I am yet to try out nightmare...
