Nuclear Throne being on Linux is something I have been asking Vlambeer to do for a while now, and this month it finally happened! Nuclear Throne is a fantastic looking Procedural Death Labyrinth built in Game Maker: Studio.

Now I know what you are thinking, tools like Game Maker don't exactly have a good history of Linux support, but Vlambeer has stated they are working closely with YoYo Games to make sure the Linux version will be "up to speed".

My Thoughts
I've had some time to test the game and it's actually a lot of fun and works really well from what I can see. apart from one issue where it crashes if you press R to quick reload after dying. That's the only issue I can see for now.

The game does at times feel a little empty due to have no music playing, but the sound quick fills up with enemies on the screen when you are franticly firing away depleting your ammo reserves. It gets hectic really, really quickly with bullet hell when there's a few of the bigger enemies filling up the screen, it gets hard to focus on dodging a barrage of bullets while trying to aim your shots as well.

Being able to blow the walls up is a nice touch too, didn't expect that. So if you arer a bit stuck somewhere you can always do that to escape somehow.

My favourite weapons so far are the laser rifle and the disc shooting cut which slices them right up.

Overall even though the game is in Early Access it gets a thumbs up from me, very fun.

Current Features

  • 11 playable characters with unique advantages, active and passive abilities and voices.

  • 7 playable main worlds and numerous secrets to be found spanning deserts, frozen cities and underground labs.

  • Over 25 ways to mutate your character, creating millions of interesting playable strategies and combinations.

  • Over 50 weapons ranging from the familiar machine-gun and shotgun ranging to the screwdriver and ion cannon.

  • Weekly updates, development livestreams and Steam forums make sure that (almost) every week, you have something new to play.

  • More than 15 tracks by LUFTRAUSERS musician Jukio Kallio, also featuring tracks and lyrics by Doseone & Eirik 'Phlogiston' Suhrke.

The game is in Early Access so beware bugs may be hiding in the most annoying places, but with my time so far it was brilliant even if I do suck at it.

It is also on Humble Store without a Linux DRM free download just yet, but that will give you a steam key for now and the DRM free download when they put it up too.

Oh, that's nice. I've been wondering for a while if it would be ported to Linux, I thought it would be Windows only.

How were you able to play this? I can't even move the mouse when the game starts

Edit: My controller was plugged in! I guess it automatically selects that.

Seen this game before and while I liked it, I was disappointed because it was made with Game Maker and therefor not running on linux. Good to see things are changing :-)

I think the 'no music' is a linux bug. You can swap weapons btw
