Voting is now open for our Linux GOTY Awards

By - | Views: 29,727

After a little bit of a clean up, voting is now officially open for our 2017 Linux GOTY Awards so get a move on!

It was quite a bit of working cleaning this one up, as much as we tried to make the category names and descriptions as clear as possible, we had a lot of submissions for games that released years ago.

Still, it's a bit of fun to do this each year. Fun to see what people pick and fun to let developers known Linux gamers enjoy their games, which is the point.

If you do somehow pick the wrong item to vote on, don't worry as you can reset it.

Voting will close Friday 19th of January.

Quoting: EikeCompare the overall best title selection for 2016 to the one for 2017. IMHO, it has already happened.
1) You're mixing up the years.

You're right, fixed it in the quote for making my point clearer.

Quoting: liamdaweI get it, we don't get a lot of AAA titles, but what's with all the negativity from people lately? Unless you had crazy wild expectations - we all knew this would take a long time to build up.

I'm still getting more good games than I've time to play (plus my time to play has shrunk dramatically). But when I look at the list of best games for 2016, it looks more impressing to me - especially big production wise - than the one for 2017. I didn't expect a huge explosion (and I'm saying so for years now), but a shrink would be/is still disappointing.

Long time to build up, all fine, but what about a long time to crumble down...?

Quoting: Perkeleen_VittupääThimbleweed Park got several votes from here! Mr. Gilbert please, moar!!
Loved it too, except for the last 5% of the games. I backed it originally, had a lot of fun playing the first 95% but was horribly disappointed by the very cheap way the story ends. Men, such a shame..

I guess people, me including, are getting anxious that we had our peak with the big titles and are now moving back straight to the dark ages. I get it, indie and AA games are certainly entertaining. But there is nearly nothing left regarding titles that you proudly present to your best friends to show how cool Linux has become if Feral decides to leave Linux completely in favor of iOS.

It feels for me currently more like tear down instead of build up. Sorry.
Where you see a dramatic fall, I see a slow climb. Maybe we're looking at different timescales? Or maybe you're just a glass-half-empty kind of guy.

The ending is weak, no question about it, but excellent game otherwise.

Well for the people who do feel down, rest assured this year will kick butt ;)

Different timescale and different kinds of titles... Sure, including indie and smaller titles it seems that the number of new titles is rising. Which is very cool! What I fear though, is that the number of big titles is declining to really just very very few per year.

Well yes, I would say that I'm a cautious kind of person, first see and then believe ;)

Quoting: burningserenityFavorite FOSS project is a tough one to vote on! That's the kind of problem I like to have.

My vote went for Linux Badass' creation

I was skeptical of Solus at first, but that was one of the things that brought me around to it. OTOH, I forgot to nominate Lutris, that project deserves some love.

I was between Dolphin-emu, OpenMW, and WINE, but ultimately I have to go with WINE. I don't use it as much as I used to since there are so many great native ports now, but I've been following it since 2009, and its really come a long way.

Linux is for hipsters, or at least that's what Windows users tell me ;)

Also, I would say indies keep getting better where so many Triple A games keeps getting worse.

What is HITMAN considered now that I/O is sans publisher? If they release chapter 2 for Linux this year, I'll be happy with whatever else does or doesn't happen.

Quoting: liamdawe3) This is all based on releases people actually know/really think will come. Many more games actually arrive than people expect.

That is of course true, but also the known titles do give an indication of the state of affairs. Her's hoping a few major bombs will drop this year too!

I don't consider myself to have a negative stance in this, but rather objective/analytical, with a negative conclusion. I see no signs of a buildup - quite the contrary.

There was a time where there was a lot of promise flying around in the air, from multiple directions. Typically we had at least rumours about some of the larger titles coming to Linux. Sure, lots of cancellations too - but at least there was movement.
But now... Well thank god for Feral, to put it that way.

Jens nailed it in this quote:

Quoting: jensI guess people, me including, are getting anxious that we had our peak with the big titles and are now moving back straight to the dark ages.

That's exactly it.

Sure, the indies will always be there for us as long as we are a platform on Steam. That's guaranteed. And sure, there's some sweet stuff coming from those quarters too. But that is a very, very weak argument for saying all is good and the glass is "half full".

Naturally, a lot of the bigger titles aren't announced until they're confident about a release date, I wouldn't say titles we actually know is an indicator of anything right now :)

Just wait and see, there will be a number of juicy releases this year, you can bet on it :P (I could probably say that line for the next 2-3 years and still be right ;)).
