OpenMW is the open source game engine for Morrowind that is really quite amazing. If you've been wanting to try it out but you don't own Morrowind, now is a good time. GOG has it on sale for cheap.

I've personally been wating to try this open source game engine, so it looks like the perfect time to pick up a copy of this classic.

It's one game I played many years ago when it first came out, but I had it on the original Xbox console and never finished it. Pleasing that I will be able to on my favourite operating system thanks to the OpenMW developers!

About OpenMW
OpenMW is a free, open source and modern engine based which reimplements and extends the one that runs the 2002 open-world RPG Morrowind. The engine comes with its own editor , called OpenMW-CS which allows the user to edit or create their own original games. Both OpenMW-CS and OpenMW are written from scratch and aren’t made to support any third party programs the original Morrowind engine uses to improve its functionality. Can't wait till we see OpenMW run perfectly, complete with mods!

I own a copy from back before I exclusively used Linux. I'll be purchasing a copy from GOG of course, now that I can play it on Linux.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but, last time I checked, OpenMW's savegame support wasn't 100% set in stone.

So, it's probably best to wait a little until the engine is ready for everyday use.

Quoting: GuestPlease don't send money to developers who only support Windows.

Ever.

If you want to play OpenMW then do so, but do not contribute money to anyone who doesn't support your platform. Doing so is the opposite of the kind of encouragement that we need to be giving developers.
I don't agree to that rule when there's an open source engine available and the game you can buy for it is DRM free from GOG.

It's not a one size fits all rule. This is a really old game.

I agree with you to a point. I wouldn't buy the game at full price to play in OpenMW, ever, but at a 50% or higher discount I am fine with it. After all, they (Bethesda) made a critical part of the experience which is the data and OpenMW seems quite capable at providing the rest. If a working, native replacement engine exists I don't see a reason not to buy the game data.

Quoting: GuestBecause you're encouraging Windows development, so I recommend playing it without donating anything to them if you want to play it, but to each their own.
I know exactly what buying the game supports, hell, I even wrote an article about a similar topic. But I also believe one should pay for the product they use if a price is placed on it. However, I am only willing to pay proportionally to the support they grant, so 50% of the price or less. After all, I only buy the product for the data as the engine and whatever technical support they would provide is useless to me.

I personally don't see the issue here, as I'm sure in the long run OpenMW will support the platform much better than a closed source port by Bethesda.

Quoting: GuestYes, it's a small amount of money, and to each their own, but I recommend against donating money to any devs who don't support us. I hope Bethesda comes around to supporting us eventually, though!
I'm not donating money. I am paying for a product I can play on Linux.

It's not encouraging Windows development to buy an unsupported 14 year old game.

Damn, 9.9€ when on sale and 19.9 € normal price for a game from 2002, seriously?!?! How much Bethesda wants to squeeze from this lemon?

I have the original CD and I payed much less for it!

I still think Morrowind is the best of the Elder Scrolls series. Oblivion and Skyrim are obviously technically superior, but they lack the atmosphere and roleplaying of Morrowind.

I've only had minor issues, and as of the most recent release the only thing I've had an issue with is one mod using fake specularity maps making things go wonky, so I had to go back to vanilla rocks for some areas.

EDIT: And I had more issues with the vanilla engine (under Wine).

I don't remember the last crash I had for a release version of OpenMW.
