The vehicular combat MMO just got a little bit bigger with the inclusion of ships for all players. There’s also plenty of other goodies in the sizeable update.

War Thunder has had a closed beta test for its naval forces for a good while now but as of the 1.83 update all players can now indulge in their seafaring fantasies. This follows from the release barely a month ago of an update adding helicopters to the game. Not all nations have gotten ships yet—only Germany, the USA and the USSR are represented in the open beta—but more will be incoming in the coming weeks and months I imagine. Still, there’s a fair range of ships you can add to your digital fleet and the largest include multi-turreted destroyers bristling with weaponry.

Aside from the new maritime additions, this update also has added a few new german helicopters, some new ground vehicles including the T-80B and a pair of aircraft. Here’s a few random highlights from the rather long changelog:

  • New naval location “Black Sea port”
  • New armour types have been added. Now naval vessels have bullet-proof, fragmentation-proof, rolled or cast homogeneous armour depending on the vessel.
  • U.S, Soviet and German helicopters are now available for research.
  • New type of explosive material “Smoke-forming composition” has been added to the smoke shells. This type of the explosive substance has been used for all smoke shells and replaced the “TNT” used previously.
  • New camo has been added for F4F-3 and F4F-4

I wanted to try my luck captaining a ship and have a few impressions up for this article but, as luck would have it, naval battles are temporarily unavailable. The game mode had been working for a day or two prior and it's only been disabled for the past few hours (as of the time when this article was published). MMOs have hiccups of this sort every now and again and I hope that whatever the issue is, it’ll be resolved fairly soon. Playing with other types of vehicles or trying the test drive function with ships works fine for the time being.

You can download War Thunder from its Official Site or Steam.

History, sci-fi, technology, cooking, writing and playing games are things I enjoy very much. I'm always keen to try different genres of games and discover all the gems out there.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.

Unfortunately this new updates causes the game to crash when using vulkan. The performance benefits to vulkan were quite nice. Mesa git has several performance problems with openGL and will induce lots of stuttering. Default meaa on ubuntu 18.10 is fine.

Works well here with Mesa 18.2.3 on Arch running the Vulkan renderer. The thumbnail used for this article was taken by me when messing around in test drive mode with Vulkan.

Have you tried a match? About 2min into a match is when I get the crash. Otherwise it is fine. I tried mesa-git as well as the default mesa for ubuntu 18.10. I get a couple of pop-up windows about submitting a crash report and one is about the error, but does not give any detailed message. I cannot remember what the error was, but I can check when I get home.

Yeah, you seem to be right, sadly. It crashed for me when I tried just now.

Was running really good with vulkan too, I have been playing a lot recently. I actually switched to regular ubuntu to play in vulkan since other DE seem to give me black screens. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon. I actually have rendering errors in opengl that I did not have in vulkan. For instance, when spectating in an air match, I will get black bars on the ground in openGL, but vulkan everything renders correctly and faster.

blackscreen with sound? i have this bug on kubuntu.
"killall kwin_x11" helps
and after exit the game ALT+SPACE -> kwin_x11 -> ENTER (if you do that ingame, it turns black again)

this problem exists for months

Yes, I get this on at least KDE and cinnamon. Gnome is perfectly fine.

How is single player with the naval forces? If I am in a WW2 ship will I encounter unrealistic opposition?

No more "unrealistic opposition" than sitting in a WW2 aircraft or a WW2 tank. Or what do you mean with "single player" when referring to a MMO game?
