What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

It's reader question time here on GamingOnLinux, something we do infrequently to generate a bit of discussion.

Having seen a number of great Linux releases lately, it's getting tough opening Steam and actually picking something to play. The very new release of Pine has certainly sucked away a lot of my time, something about the world Twirlbound created has seriously pulled me in. It's not without issues though. While forcing my CPU to stay in Performance mode has made it smoother, it definitely needs improving.

Some of the quests in Pine don't seem like they've been thought through enough with the game mechanics. There's a time you need to get special tokens from different types of creatures like gatherers, traders and guards. So to help you're given blueprints for some traps. Something that should be a challenge but I decided to run around the nearest town and just place traps directly in front of every creature around and in the space of 2 minutes it was done. It was really dumb but it worked.

The world in Pine is certainly not as big as it initially seemed either, it doesn't actually take that long to see the entire area. It gives a good illusion of a lot to do but so far it seems a little basic. Don't let me put you off though, I'm thoroughly nitpicking. Still great fun, just not even close to as expansive as expected.

Meanwhile, I've also carried on my playthrough of the latest Factorio release. Maddeningly engrossing. Incredible game, with such a massive amount of depth to it. The complexity isn't even remotely hidden and yet, it feels so ridiculously approachable it's a real joy to play.

Anyway, enough about what I've been clicking on lately. Over to you, what have you been playing recently and what do you think about it? Help your fellow readers find another interesting game to pick up.

Had been craving an old-school arena shooter for a while and discovered Warfork on Steam. It's been an absolute blast and there are actually populated NA servers, as this is sadly a dying genre here. Great game to fire up and get in a few quick frags.

Picked up UnderMine last night and though I've only played for about an hour so far I'm enjoying the setting and pacing. Really looking forward to digging deeper into this one over the weekend.

Well, i play pine. And what should i say, it is fine :) Of course, it is not Zelda BOTW, but i like it pretty much.
I also try to finish Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and look forward to Kalypsos Commandos 2 Remaster, because i like that stuff.

I asked that before but now that more of you played it a bit:

Does it contain a story that has some kind of goal (by means of playing through the game) or is it more like an open-world sandbox game with some missions?

BotW had a nice story and delivered that play-through story.
Pine is quite cheap, so I guess it's lacking the story content? :)

After Epic's giveaway a couple of weeks ago (yeah, I gave in; it's not as if I've given them any money or anything), I've been playing Lego Batman (still my favourite of the Lego games; it must be my third or fourth playthrough across various platforms) and Batman: Arkham City. I quite like the Arkham series, but although I understand the combat system (someone once described it as more of a rhythm-action game than a brawler), I always get to a point where I'm overwhelmed by enemies in a boss battle I can't back out of thanks to the autosave system.

Quoting: chancho_zombieDon't get me wrong it's a fine AAA open world game but not at the same level of the Just Cause series or Arkham series.
I know what you mean. It's... okay. Good enough. Nothing exactly bad about it. It's really hard to say anything about it without making it sound worse than it actually is. The most creative description I came up with when I was talking about it to a friend is that it's like Just Cause if it had been made by Ubisoft.

Quoting: eldakingJust today I finally reached Big Boss 1 on Dota Underlords, which is nice.

I have recently decided to give Pillars of Eternity a try and its really good, but I am not really into RPGs. I'll try to finish this one though.

And I have recently gone back to Crusader Kings 2. I think I'll do a super-religious France roleplay run and maybe get a few achievements.

Pillars of Eternity is a fantastic game very close to the classic Baldur's Gate games.
Yet, way(!) too much text for me, much more than BG1+2 had.

Pillars of Eternity 2 is really, REALLY good. PoE1 OTOH, not so much. The end is neat, but the entire story feels too gimmicky to really work. The real killjoy being the insane amounts of combat against enemies with about 3 times the hp they ought to have.

On a completely unrelated note, I've been playing some Ittle Dew, which is a neat action adventure puzzle game.

I liked PoE1 at first, but I then came to hate all that repetetive fighting. Having to fight always the same groups of adversaries, every time getting less experience points, having to rest my group so often, using up rare camping equipment, having to travel for more... It made the game more and more tedious to me..

typo again ->

Still playing elite dangerous via wine. No hiccups so far. I absolutely love old space traders like privateer, so this really is enjoyable. Dying I'd rather frustrating, but not any worse than the old games if yore.

Ps, don't know why no one ever made a star wars themed space trader. The setting would be perfect for it. Who doesn't want to be Han solo?

Playing Battletech. I'm enjoying it. At first I was just leaving all my mechs pretty much stock, and trying to get a balanced group of mech pilots in terms of the abilities they went for. But I've gradually gotten a bit more opinionated about weapon mixes and what's effective, and very slightly cleverer about tactics, and I'm certainly having fun getting my hands on heavier mechs and watching them stomp some of the wimpier opponent mechs into the ground. And the campaign thingie is fairly interesting. So, good game IMO.

For anyone playing it, one of my key takeaways has been that one big weapon is usually much better than a few little weapons or a bunch of missiles doing the same damage, because mechs take damage at individual locations. So one big punch could take out a location where missiles would distribute light damage across the armour of all locations and leave the enemy intact. Having an AC20 do a called shot to the torso of a mid-sized mech and take it out in one shot is one of my favourite things. (So is stepping on puny little tanks)
