What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

It's reader question time here on GamingOnLinux, something we do infrequently to generate a bit of discussion.

Having seen a number of great Linux releases lately, it's getting tough opening Steam and actually picking something to play. The very new release of Pine has certainly sucked away a lot of my time, something about the world Twirlbound created has seriously pulled me in. It's not without issues though. While forcing my CPU to stay in Performance mode has made it smoother, it definitely needs improving.

Some of the quests in Pine don't seem like they've been thought through enough with the game mechanics. There's a time you need to get special tokens from different types of creatures like gatherers, traders and guards. So to help you're given blueprints for some traps. Something that should be a challenge but I decided to run around the nearest town and just place traps directly in front of every creature around and in the space of 2 minutes it was done. It was really dumb but it worked.

The world in Pine is certainly not as big as it initially seemed either, it doesn't actually take that long to see the entire area. It gives a good illusion of a lot to do but so far it seems a little basic. Don't let me put you off though, I'm thoroughly nitpicking. Still great fun, just not even close to as expansive as expected.

Meanwhile, I've also carried on my playthrough of the latest Factorio release. Maddeningly engrossing. Incredible game, with such a massive amount of depth to it. The complexity isn't even remotely hidden and yet, it feels so ridiculously approachable it's a real joy to play.

Anyway, enough about what I've been clicking on lately. Over to you, what have you been playing recently and what do you think about it? Help your fellow readers find another interesting game to pick up.

7 Days to Die and Mount and Blade Warband: Napoleon DLC. I guess I like games that takes hours to play LOL

Mostly been playing battletech, and recently battletech advanced 3062 mod. The game is great and all but plenty of issues including gradual memory leaks or slowdowns after a period of time.

Fortunately I got it for $12 and the dlc for urban about the same. The game just needs a huge amount of performance and bug fixes, STILL...

I've been playing Code Vein via Proton. It's anime Dark Souls. I like it so far, Bamco seems to have a good grasp on what makes the Souls formula work and the game has enough special abilities to spice things up.

I've been playing nothing, for the past few days I've just been reading a bunch of public domain e-books on my jailbroken Kindle. I've come to appreciate the fact that most fiction is terrible and for most my life my reading experience had been heavily curated by others.

Daymare: 1998. This game is so bad, do not play it. It needs mfplat fix to run.

Crash Bandicoot™ N. Sane Trilogy. On the contrary, this one is a very good remake of the original PS1 games. Same levels, same secrets, same stuff to collect, same controls, new graphics. Some people say Crash is being controlled worse than in the original, but I think it's actually easier now to do precise jumps. It has technical issues though. In CB1 the framerate sometimes drops to 30 fps. Camera can go mad if you jump to a secret place by the "wrong" side of a pit leading here. The game got frozen several times (or should I say crashed?), mostly in CB2. The strangest thing so far is a couple of broken scripts, and it seems I'm the only one who has encountered that. Can it be so because of it's being played on Linux by Proton? If you are playing, tell me if you could get all the boxes on 'Un-Bearable' in CB2.
I've finished CB1 and CB2 so far. I'm trying to get all gems when it's not too hard.
Get Crash and Spyro remakes on Humble Monthly Bundle, it's definitely worth it.

X4 - even though some quests appear to be a bit buggy. It has a great depth, and kept me busy 90 hours, so far.

Compared to X2 it is more easy to progress and make money, so it's up to me how fast I want to be magnate or lay more importance into better know the whole universe.

Quoting: g000hI revisited FTL: Faster Than Light recently for a number of play sessions.

After finally scoring all the achievements on hard mode, I graduated to the Captain's Edition mod (with the Endless Loot mod, it's FTL-meets-Borderlands). It's pretty-much FTL2.

However, due to issues with libbass, it's simpler to force it to play the windows version through proton. For the last few years, I've had lots of problems with sound on the linux-native version, but all were cured by playing in wine. Since Steam added the "force proton version" option, FTL has been painless.

Seriously, if you wear the game out, explore Captain's Edition. It's HUGE, and endorsed by FTL creator Justin Ma.

I use the Linux-native (*cough* java *cough*) version of Slipstream Mod Manager on the Windows files, and it works fine.

FTL is the best ever.

Civ VI, playing for the first time I noticed I'm way too slow with working through the tech tree. My neighbour was running around with huge death robots when I had just invented the cannon. :|

Quoting: TobyGornowCurrently playing Nier : Automata with Proton / SteamPlay. So far, great game on every aspect except some backtracking during optional quest.
What hardware do you use?

I'm using a 3570K @ 4.3, 8 Gb, a GTX 970 and the game is installed on an SSD. Every options on max, 1080p, I've got between 30 and 40 fps with the latest version of Proton. Not bad and not great, just playable. Waiting for my new 5700XT I've ordered and then around january, I'm changing the rest of the computer.
