Wildman gives hints and small hope for Linux!

By - | Views: 4,054
Wildman the new Kickstarter from Gas Powered Games (authors of Dungeon Siege, Supreme Commander, Demigod) has stated they are switching their renderer to OpenGL for Linux and Mac!

QuoteWe currently support Windows. However, we are currently in the process of making our underlying technology more platform-agnostic. Specifically, we’re switching out the renderer from Windows-only Direct3D to the multi-platform OpenGL. This opens the door to other platforms. Those other platforms (i.e. Linux, MacOS) are TBD.

You wouldn't do that if you weren't going to try to bring your games to other platforms :)

Wildman delivers a thrilling mix of action-role-playing and real-time strategy that only a developer like Gas Powered Games can deliver.

In brief, this is what Wildman is all about:

Going to War: Build your army and fight against opposing champions armies for great rewards in hand-crafted War Zones.

Exploring the World: Go on RPG Adventures in amazing and epic environments; discover secret dungeons; fight battles against rampaging hordes of monsters; find and equip new weapons and armor.

Evolving or Dying: Steal technology from your defeated opponents and use it against them in future battles.

Smashing and Destroying: Advanced physics and destructible environments deliver highly visceral (and bloody) combat.

The fact that this is from one of my all time favourite game developers Chris Taylor who did Total Annihilation is really showing how far Linux has come! I will keep you all posted on this one as I have told the kickstarter to remind me! :) Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Yep, that's pretty much what they wrote to me on the 14th (I sent Gas Powered a query via Kickstarter when it launched, before too many people hopped on and clogged up their message queue).

QuoteGas Powered Games says:

Hi there, thanks for your interest.
We are currently switching our render from Direct3D to OpenGL in anticipation of it being more multi-platform, but we're not quite ready to announce where Linux specifically fits into this strategy.

Still, we know the love for Linux out there; it's definitely on our radar.

I liked this response a little better, as it addresses Linux directly. I give them a bit more leeway over the many, many Unity 4 game projects which ask for hundreds of thousands of additional dollars to do their porting work, as significant effort may possibly be required to achieve robust, solid performance on Linux by porting a custom engine.

I suppose I ought to start passing that kind of stuff on as soon as I learn it... :-P
