It's another title ported to Linux by Ethan Lee, otherwise known as "flibitijibibo". He's now ported around 50 games going by his portfolio. That's quite incredible really and shows his dedication to his work!

The developer personally told me this about the game's tools:
QuoteEthan suggested that more technically-minded Linux users may be interested in the tools and tech behind the game. Most of the tools are shipped with the game (through a setting "Editor=true" in the Settings.cfg file) as they happen to be completely portable. While the game wasn't really designed to be casually moddable (they are our internal tools), and it is heavily reliant on custom hand draw graphics (aka not easy to add new contents), we're hoping that some users will have fun hacking it or just toying with the tools.

You can see a screenshot of the tools below:

I think this is really awesome and I can't wait to see what people manage to cook up with the tools available.

About the game
QuoteBoasting beautiful, hand-drawn animations and a re-orchestrated soundtrack, the cult classic returns with a unique blend of exploration, action, and adventure!

Cursed into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, you are in search for a cure! The only way you can return to human form is to find the Salamander Cross, a magical item with the power to remove curses...

With each dragon slain, the curse intensifies, transforming you into different animals! Explore large, interconnected locations populated with grumpy monsters and exotic dragons!

You can find Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap on Steam and Humble Store. The Linux version is coming to GOG, but they are having a few problems there right now.

I've been sent a key by the developer today, so I will be taking a look at it more thoroughly later in the week. Since I was only sent it today I've not had the time to review it yet. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Including the tools are easily justifying a full price buy by itself IMHO. Ofc the game itself probably does too but I can't say yet. =)

Having serious doubts whether I should pick this one up for Linux or the Switch.

I love that they actually went with hand drawn art, instead of slightly better pixel art. That's how you you do a retro remake.

Platformers are not really my cup of tea , but those graphics are gorgeous.

I wish I could buy the artists a beer.

A port by Ethan means a buy from me, in the case of this game it's going to be an instant one too. Thank you!

Awesome game!. I was playing it about an hour and is really, really great. Fantastic graphics, art and OST. Retro mode is gorgeous. Thanks DotEmu, thanks Lizardcube and of course, thanks Ethan Lee.

I'm waiting impatiently for the night to play it again

This game is great, just played it a for a few hours. If there is an editor, does that mean someone will add in the other Wonder Boy games? I always thought it odd this series faded away for so long.

Can't help but have this song stuck in my head now...

Speaking of songs, I actually like the retro music better.
