A couple of bits of news from Egosoft to share for their massive space sci-fi sandbox X4: Foundations.

First of all, the latest 2.60 update is out for X4: Foundations. It's not a massive patch in terms of features but it does include some nice quality of life updates to the base game like:

  • Significantly improved in-game economy
  • Better navigation, both for the player guidance system and for AI ships
  • Updated Logical Station Overview and Station Info menu
  • Russian voice recordings

There's also well over 100 bugs that were fixed. Considering bugs in the game are one of the biggest complaints, it's quite an important update that could make the experience a whole lot smoother.

As for the big X4: Split Vendetta expansion (the first of two currently planned) and the upcoming 3.0 overhaul update, they're both unfortunately delayed until sometime in the first part of 2020. They said "a number of things have emerged that we really want to see implemented, optimised and fixed in time for the next big step forward for X4: Foundations" which is fair enough.

They really need to get this right too, if they manage to it could really turn things around for them after a rough release initially. The current rating on Steam is still suffering from that, with it being Mixed overall from users. If the DLC and big 3.0 patch hit the mark, perhaps it could be turned back into a Positive and help Egosoft push X4 to new heights.

You can fly on over to Humble Store, GOG or Steam for a copy of X4: Foundations.

The hat as "POV" strafe is still not working for my T.16000M :-( I am not even able to file a bug report because it behaves so completely strange.

Nevertheless, thanks to Egosoft to improve the game!

Well, maybe by the end of 2020 then...

Is that new? I remember having configured my HOTAS for X4 without much difficulty. I have been playing with the Steam Controller though.

Still too soon to buy it?

I don't know, but I've been enjoying the game for over 250 hours now with v2.50... there are certainly bugs to be fixed and things to be improved, but it's not like it is completely broken and not fun at all. Nothing that "really needs to get" fixed immediately because you absolutely can't play, and certainly nothing that needs turning around or else it goes in the completely wrong direction.

One might argue that they should have delayed the launch itself instead of launching a half finished product last year, and I'd agree – but it has been that way with Egosoft for the past twenty years when "X: Beyond the Frontier" was launched, and they have always been criticized for that (and apparently still haven't learned ;) ), yet they have always followed up their borked releases with bugfix patches and updates that not only fixed stuff but improved gameplay.

I can't tell you... just played 2.50 so far... The behaviour is far from reproducible. Sometimes I press "right" and the ship really goes right - until I fiddle around with the hat and then the ship might or might not go straight ahead again - or it strafes up / down wherever... Its not usable at all :-( In the menus my hat is working like a charm - and I never had anywhere else such strange problems with it.

I'm not saying it's completely broken. The bit you quoted is in relation to the next update and DLC release.

I get that. But what "things" do you think "really" need "turning around"? That's some strong emphasis there IMO... what am I missing?
All I see from Egosoft is a continuous stream of bugfixes and improvements, for X4 specifically, but also for all of their history.

I mean of course there are design decisions I personally would like to see reversed, like those "space highways", or requiring an online connection for "achievements" in a single player game and linking game features to them...

As with all versions of the X series, there's lots of complaints from users and overhauls, improvements & significant fixes from the developers after the first release. So, is it something bad? Is the game bad? I think, you will have lots of trouble finding any other commerical product whose company is so much dedicated to their work, especially looking at how long they provide support / updates for their products. That's a real exception in the gaming business. So, from my point of view it was - and still is - worth supporting them (if you like that kind of games; and: no, I'm not getting paid by them, though it may sound like that). Although I'm usually buying the X games pretty early, I usually wait for some time / updates to let it mature before I seriously invest a huge amount of time. I'd consider each X-game like a good wine: it becomes better the older it gets.

Yes, they seem to be supporting it well and that's fantastic but yet again they released in a form that was clearly far too rough. My point about turning it around was about the public outlook and how with a good DLC release plus a big 3.0 patch that hits the mark, they can turn around their current rating into one that is positive. I've adjusted the article to make my point more clear.
