Yrminsul Tower Defence Released For Linux, Video & Thoughts

Today I take a look at Yrminsul a tower defence game from Studio Black Flag and it's their first foray into commercial game development, so how does it live up to my expectations?

My thoughts
One thing to note is that in the video sequence after the initial tutorial mission the text that comes up in the subtitle area is in French, it's supposed to be like that. The developer stated to me that they didn't want to add another 60mb to the game for different videos. It did confuse me a bit until they told me this though, but their reasoning is fair.

The graphics in the game are beautifully crafted and well suited for a comical tower defence game, the comic strips also look professionally done and add a little light-hearted humour into the game. Once you get into more varied battlefield the colours of the game really come out and it looks really solid.

The game seemed to get stuck loading at certain points causing me to think the game had crashed, but once you get passed that it was fine again oddly. It only ever happened switching to a section I hadn't seen before.

It doesn't seem like a pick up and play game as you can tell from the video there's quite a bit to learn at the start, it did feel a little overwhelming to have so much information pushed at you, but then once you get the basics it is really quite fun. It's fantastic to see someone mix up the Tower Defence game types with research, powers during battles and more. Overall the game does feel well polished.

I would say it's a safe bet, go buy it. I will give it 4/5 coffee beans.

You can grab it on Desura right now!
