I wanted to revisit some of my favorite SNES games so I downloaded SNES9x. After unpacking snes9x-1.53-gtk-81-x86_64.tar.bz2, nothing happens when I double-click the "snes9x-gtk" file.
Check if it has executable permissions. If it does, start it from the command line and see if it says something. If it doesn't start at all, try "ldd snes9x-gtk" and see if it's missing any dependencies.
Hi in my case works with this ppa
snes9x is on the Ubuntu software center, you should just be able to install from there and run as normal.

i realise this is an old thread but i recommend trying retroarch, it has many versions of popular emulators available as cores, including snes.
