Elderscrolls Online crashes using Steamplay.
megamanx1978 commented on 20 June 2019 at 5:56 am UTC

When I click the play button in Steam to play ESO via Steamplay both ESO and Steam crash at the same time.

Specs:
Kubuntu 18.04
Kernel 5.1.10
Proton 4.2-7
CPU Ryzen 7 1800X
GPU Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080TI
Driver 430.26
Ram 32GB

I am grateful for any help.

put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% into into the steam launch options and then launch it, it will create a log file into your home folder to see whats the problem

I added the PROTON_LOG=1 %command% launch command to ESO. Where in the Home folder is the log file located and what is the name of the log file? Also how do I add the log file to this post?

paste it to pastebin.com or something and share the link.

it should be called steam-xxxxx.log numbers are for the game. so something like steam-306130.log if the number from steamdb is the correct one for ESO

I still don't know the exact filesystem path for the log file.

$HOME/steam-306130.log

/home/username/steam-306130.log

Strange I don't see the log file in that location even after doing everything you said. Maybe there is another way of doing this?

if the log isn't even created, then steamplay/proton doesn't even start for you. So you have something misconfigured or similar, or do not have the required drivers etc. can be many things. Start steam from terminal to see whats up.

Try installing these dependencies, and see if it helps.

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
sudo apt-key add winehq.key
sudo apt-add-repository 'https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/'
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging
sudo apt install winetricks

I had the same issue, try this as a launcher option as it has worked for me:

PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
