Games you slept on/wrote off, but eventually won you over.

Beat and 100%'d Crash Bandicoot 1 on PS1 (Duckstation emulator) recently, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I owned a PS1 as a kid, I grew up playing the Mario franchise more and developed a bias towards it, which is why I basically wrote off the Crash franchise as just another Mario wanna-be children's collectathon game. I was then surprised to find out that it isn't that at all. Why did I choose to play it recently? I like to challenge myself and explore outside of my comfort zone from time to time, just to see if I really do believe what I think I believe. Crash Bandicoot reminds me more of the original Tomb Raider series from Core Design than it does of typical collectathon games of its era. It's got that addictive precise platforming mechanic that I wish I saw more of from other 3D platforming games. I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it, and found myself clapping when I saw the credits roll when I got the real ending - the one you get when you 100% the game. Great game.

What games did you write off in the past, but ended up really appreciating later down the road?

The entire racing game genre. If you had told me 10 years ago I'd be playing a racing game daily (gotta grind those DiRT Rally 2.0 dailies), I'd have called you crazy, yet here I am. Currently I'm sleeping on other sports games (football (both association and gridiron), hockey, basketball, tennis,...) and military shooters (though I do kinda like First Encounter Assault Recon), but who knows, they may eventually win me over as well.

Bayonetta is something I occasionally heard about and never touched until relatively recently and it was insane (both literally and because it was really good). It's on steam but then you can also get Bayonetta 2 to play in a switch emulator, I remember finishing it in one sitting and not because it was short.

Yakuza 0 was kind of the same story, there are few things out there that go harder, you just breathe drama while playing.

Also at some point I found some really cool newer point and click games which I haven't played since antiquity, namely NORCO and Unavowed

World of Warcraft.

Played it in Vanilla, kept at it for several months but didn't really like it very much.

Fast forward 4 years or so, Wrath of the Lich King has just launched and I gave it another go.

17yrs later at 51? Still playing, mythic progression raider with 9 Cutting Edge achievements, Hall of Fame etc, but starting to think about when I'll retire from that high-end playstyle. Forever is looking like a great alternative, much slower pace overall. It's the same vanilla game that I quit over 20yrs ago, but crucially I think I'm ready for it now 😆

More recently?

Metroid Dread.

Metroid is my favourite game series ever, starting with Super Metroid back on the Super Nes back in the early-mid 90's, and I'll usually buy each Nintendo console generation specifically for it and Zelda games.

Tried playing Dread when it was first released on Switch 1 about 5 years ago, and HATED the EMMI fights and pursuits. I hate time pressure or panic mechanics in any game, including WoW, and I bounced off it, despite really REALLY wanting to play it. Especially as it was the first classic 2D mainline Metroid game in nearly 20 years.

Decided recently to go back to it after getting the Switch 2, and I'm enjoying it a bit more now. I've decided to try to stress less over the EMMI mechanics, and just enjoy the rest of the game, which is excellent btw.

My introduction to the Metroid franchise was Super Metroid too, and it was for that reason that I couldn't appreciate the original NES Metroid as a kid. Despite having negative preconceived notions about NES Metroid, a few years ago I decided to play through it anyway... and it's not so bad. I wouldn't say it's great, but I can appreciate how ambitious of a game it was for 1986. Next to Super Metroid, it's still pretty bad. Super Metroid is one of the GOATs. Haven't played through Dread yet.

Metroid would have to be one of my fav childhood series ever as well, and I absolutely HATED the modern Metroid Dread, for all the reasons you stated. Nintendo ... just ... WHHHYYYYY THAT MECHANIC IS SOOOOO TERRIBLE EVERYONE HATES IT

XWing - when I first started it, it was just too complicated and hard. Not easy and accesssible (shoot anything that moves) like Wing Commander.

Only some time later I tried again and played through it...
which then led to immediately getting TIE Fighter which was leaps and bounds better...

Wing Commander... that's a franchise I haven't heard about in a long time. The only Wing Commander game I played through was Wing Commander: Academy. It's a sandbox Wing Commander game without a story campaign. The Chris Roberts game I got into as a kid was Strike Commander. For those that haven't heard of it, it was a Top Gun inspired 90s flight sim with a story. It was pretty cool, and very ambitious. You needed top of the line gear just to run it. I got the game as a kid in 1995, but I couldn't actually play it till 1999 (6 years after its release) because our 1995 PC couldn't run it.

I have just played the first mission of Strike Commander. Would perhaps be worth another try...

Wing Commander... If Chris Roberts would have the rights, Star Citizen would surely be named Wing Commander. (-:

I would love to give Star Citizen a try, but I don't wanna play it until it gets its full release, which may never happen. Surely Chris Roberts still has rights to Wing Commander, doesn't he? It's his game.
