How to livestream from Linux to Twitch, a simple guide to being awesome on Linux
By g000h, 7 March 2017 at 8:46 pm UTC

Thanks for sharing. Always good to have information like this in case I'd need it.

One thing I think a lot of new Linux gaming users would like is information about setting up graphics drivers on Linux. What to do if your display manager stops working, how to install a proprietary driver (and get rid of it again), all those tricky things.

If anyone want NVENC or VAAPI in FFMPEG and in your system repo is only basic FFMPEG without this. You can use static build daily git from here: http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/
and this build have both nvenc and vaapi. So you don't need compile it from source :)

Quoting: CreakMaybe I'm wrong, but for what I understand HDCP isn't a feature, it's a mandatory API that has to be implemented if you want to connect devices using DVI, HDMI, DP, etc... A BD player needs it, but your display needs it also. So, no HDCP, no image basically...

I don't think it's mandatory. It's only used when some device requests it. You can use DP without HDCP. So having a DRM-free firmware should be a possibility, as long as you don't plan to use any HDCP dependent garbage.

Quoting: liamdaweWell, on Arch it's pretty simple I don't have to do anything other than install the ffmpeg that has nvenc with it. Arch has made a lot of stuff surprisingly simple :)

Well on Manjaro there is version 17 for now. Using here Manjaro with open-rc on one system! :)

I had the same thought, except I loved Chuck Rock on the old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive back in the day. I am a sucker for this kind of stuff, definitely going to give it a look.

Quoting: 0aTTUpdating OBS is a pain, because of NVENC we have to recompile and install OBS/ffmpeg manually. With these few changes is seems really not worthwhile. Still using version 15.

But thank you for reporting this.

depends what distro you use.. Arch for example has nvenc included in default ffmpeg. not hard at all.

I'm still waiting for AMD VCE hardware encoding support. While this is already working with vaapi and libx264 it's still considered to be a hack due to the fact there's no official support for it by AMD. :'(

This looks very nice, glad to see that the brief 2.5D era of point and click games is getting some love.

@liamdawe, maybe there should be some pre-prepared questions to send to Kickstarter projects to see if we'd actually get the game or not. One of those would be "what middleware are you using?". Might be a good way to weed out the serious people from the ones who over-promise things during their campaigns to try and reach the goal.

The most annoying problems I have with OBS are:
Swapping colors when I change the focus.
Integration with StreamLabs using QtWebKit. Sound alerts do not work.

At the time of this post, they have not yet updated their Ubuntu PPA (it's still on 16.2.1). Hopefully that'll be coming soon.

https://launchpad.net/~obsproject/+archive/ubuntu/obs-studio

Edit: I have a copy of my .deb that I built from git on Ubuntu 16.10 64-bit here. Use at your own risk, of course. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_Ul-KHYc6utT25FUmZzVkxfRE0
There might be some dependencies you'll need.

Quoting: GuestIs there an option to make the background not white?
Yes, from the article:
Quoting: meIt has three different colour modes if you find the black on white too harsh on your eyes. You can invert the black and white (to have a black background) and also have a sepia mode, if either makes it a better experience.

Quoting: GuppyI'm curious - under what circumstances would you need HDCP with linux ? I mean there is ( AFAIK ) no licensed BD player for linux so we don't really have a source of HDCP content or am I missing something here?

As I understand it HDCP is only needed for protected content - basically a bluray player asks if HDCP is supported ( properly via crypto challange ) and if that fails it refuses playback.
For instance HDMI recorders like elgato needs a HDCP free signal, and because of that the PS4 has the ability to turn off HDCP which in turn disables bluray playback

Quoting: soulsourceIf you need either OpenCL 2.0 or OpenGL compatibility contexts (if you don't know what those are, you don't need them), use the proprietary drivers.
Unfortunately there are some games which rely on compat profiles contexts IIRC.

Quoting: jaguaris it time to go AMD route for our next graphic card? (almost same perf than nvidia closed + open source driver)
is it possible to run the latest AAA with the open source driver?
I personally own a RX 480 and I'm quite happy with it. My kind of games are Dota 2, Cities: Skyline, Civilization (all of them :D ), Alien: Isolation, ...
I'm sure an NVIDIA card would perform better for the same price, but I like the fact that with AMD it is plug and play thanks to the open source drivers, and also that each new release of Mesa bring a ton of improvements!

Wine 2.3 released with more Direct3D command stream and Shader Model 5 work
By wojtek88, 7 March 2017 at 1:14 pm UTC

The day Witcher 3 is playable on Wine will be milestone for me. Next steps will be GTA V and Fallout 4.
Having those titles playable will be great and it would be easier to convince people who like playing games to switch to Linux when Windows 7 looses it's support.

Of course there was a moment when Windows XP lost it's support and Linux missed it. One of the reasons was that Wine wasn't mature enough. With Wine in such a good shape it would be a good moment to take a little more from the market.
Microsoft tried to force people to upgrade to Windows 10 because they see the risk of loosing part of the market when support for Windows 7 ends. Unfortunately for them, they put so many questionable solutions to it's newer system, that some people didn't want to upgrade.

If they will have alternative (to Windows) system, that would allow them to play their favorite games and wouldn't spy them on every interaction with the system, they may consider it as a viable alternative.

I backed this game hoping they will make it, sounds different/interesting enough to me and quite like the art. As in every game backed, or even bought after it's completion, there can be disappointments and let downs but that's just a "risk" as a consumer imo. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like they will make it to the goal.

Quoting: liamdaweDo you really need to be so pedantic? You know what I meant.
I didn’t at first – my initial thought after reading this sentence was “11 % of Linux gamers? That sounds like about a half of AMD users. Cannot be true, has to be much less.” Only after I checked the stats myself, I understood you indeed mean AMD Linux gamers, not all of them.
Either way, I've made it a little clearer :)
