Wine Staging updated, allows you to play DOOM on Linux
By skinnyraf, 22 December 2016 at 7:44 am UTC Likes: 1

A game from a historically Linux-friendly developer, using OpenGL and now Vulkan, DRM dropped... and not working on Linux because of the policy of the publisher? No, thank you, not going to spend money on it. Anyway, I haven't completed Bioshock Infinite or Metro games yet.

Good news, as I think this may be the best it's gonna get for this game. Bethesda couldn't care less about Linux unfortunately.

I`m happy to pay for DRM Free Games an I use only GOG. I dont need that shit like Steam. If they are worried about piracy no worries most of Steam games are cracked. Even steam achievements can be hacked it so easy just use GooGle.

Quoting: Kuduzkehpanwell at least linux version updated. maybe near future with vulkan engine arma 3 could be easly cross-platform. and offical linux support arrives in no pain.
still thanks to vp.

I expect for Arma 4 (or some sort) in the feature to use Vulkan.

Have to say, I'm super hyped about this. I actually dual-boot to Windows for games like this one.

Most of the time, I'm playing Linux games on Linux, and it can be weeks (or months) of continuous Linux use (not booting up Windows at all). The game has to 'really' appeal to me for me to load up Windows in order to play it.

The progress of the Wine compatibility layer is great news for Linux gamers who want to play all their older 'Windows only' titles which will never get ported, as well as all the new ones which might get ported or might not.

It is great news that Vulkan API games run under Wine on Linux with such fantastic framerates. I hope game developers really get behind Vulkan technology, because it is OPEN and it performs great. And if the company decides to port it to Linux, it'll be easier. And if the company doesn't port it to Linux, then we can still get it working with Wine.

Game companies should protect their own futures, because a monopoly like Microsoft has the power to back them into a corner.

Civ VI Steam forum mods banning users for expressing Linux support
By Joeyboots80, 22 December 2016 at 4:05 am UTC

Quoting: BlackBloodRumWell, I was 100% sure I was going to buy Civ VI. But after seeing this.. I'm about 0% sure I'm buying it. In fact I'm tempted to just ignore it if it releases on Linux.

They are now anti-linux (the only platform I use) so why should I continue to support someone who dislikes me and my platform?

Sorry guys, but they just lost a guaranteed sale.

I wanted to play this game with you too buddy. You were gonna kick my ass in it remember? :( Well if you're not getting it, I don't think I will either.

I am not so sure that Firaxis is "anti-Linux, but I will tell you I am sick and tired of the apathy shown towards our community by AAA pubs/devs in regards to ports or support for ports, a few obvious exceptions notwithstanding. Being marginalized isn't fun, and when you speak out about this neglect or about moderators on forums/threads favoring Windows users you're labeled "toxic". But the Win-Trolls brow-beating you aren't even sneezed at in most cases. It's ridiculous.

I would like to say though that I agree that posting "+1 Linux!" is dumb and people should stop it. It makes us look like a bunch of 14-year olds, no disrespect to actual 14-year olds, but I am a grown man and I suspect a lot of the folks that post "+1 Linux!" in every Linux port request thread are as well. At least give a game you really want a sentence or two explaining or expressing your interest. Come on guys.

As has been mentioned earlier by others, the advice to ignore a troll only works if the troll's goal is to get a rise out of you. But when a troll is trying to silence you or get a thread derailed or shut down to keep you or others like you from showing your interest in a title to a dev, the strategy changes.

Well.. Dying Light is available natively on Linux on Steam... Sadly the DRMFREE edition is Windows only...
The same goes for Metro Redux.

The problem with Dying Light is that it doesn't work under Mesa at all due to using OpenGL compatibility profiles that Mesa does not yet support (and have no current plans to support), and the performance of it under AMDGPU-Pro is horrendous! When it can run under Wine, that will surely perform better. Heck, it couldn't be any worse!

It's not far off. Many DX11 titles (that don't have copy protection) seem to be working to some degree. Killing Floor, Watch Dogs and Grey Goo now run for example, although the graphics are somewhat corrupted. Other titles such as Dying Light continue to crash, but get much further into the game before ultimately failing with a D3D11-related error.

Give it a few more months. This is like the early days of Wine supporting D3D9 all over again - it's going to take time, but compatible games will gradually trickle down faster and faster over the coming year.

I prefer not to buy Windows games if possible, but I love my Blizzard games and I really wanted to play Doom since it was the first PC game I ever played in the 90s...

The Vulkan performance is very exciting... Hopefully an indication of the future of Linux gaming.

Arma 3 Linux port updated to Arma 1.64
By olastea, 22 December 2016 at 12:31 am UTC

I instabuyed the APEX DLC after downloading this 1.64 update.
And unfortunately I have the same issue : I can not launch Arma III anymore :-( !

I hope the devs will fix the issue quickly.

So far, I was very happy with the Arma III port which ran at a pretty decent speed with great graphics. (my kids and me played 40+ hours, only in solo campaign)
I did not encounter any noticeable bug before this APEX issue.

Arma 3 Linux port updated to Arma 1.64
By Servoll, 21 December 2016 at 11:45 pm UTC Likes: 1

I would warn and say wait buying the Apex expansion/DLC. I can no longer launch the game. The game worked all fine after the update to 1.64, but after buying the Apex expansion/DLC it just crash on launch with the error "Bad version 72 in p3d file 'a3\vegetation_f_exp\clutter\grass\c_grassbunch_hi.p3d'". I tried both verifying the game cache and a total reinstall, unfortunately to no help.

I can't see how I can disable the DLC either so i'm now unable to play Arma 3.

EDIT: Other users experience the same issue and there's a forum thread for it here with a temporary fix that at least makes us able to run the game again.

By TheRiddick, 21 December 2016 at 11:36 pm UTC

Windows version just received a 64bit exe, so maybe they can do the same for the Linux version. It must be getting to the stage where its VERY easy for them to produce these patches. Once that happens there shouldn't be much of a delay. Surely the agent who is doing the Linux version understands that keeping it up to date will increase sales for them!

Teal: Just one thing. By default in Ubuntu is "repeat key after press" or something like that. I.e., if you hold key, it takes it as repeated press.

This however clashes with WT, which does not recognize this option.

Another thing, some destroyed tanks have broken texture or something with my fgrlx drivers. Once I destroyed enemy tank and it spit out broken rainbow that covered my whole vision. But since world is moving from fgrlx, it doesn't matter anymore. I should update to U16 anyway.
