X-Plane 11 flight simulator will release this year, with Linux support
By Stupendous Man, 10 October 2016 at 8:41 am UTC

Quoting: wolfyrion... ONLY pilots will buy their game since they earn a lot of $$$....

Hahahaha, if only that were true!!! Once upon a time what you said was very true, but in the last 10 years salaries and working conditions have plummeted drastically for pilots, and in many parts of the world it is now usual for pilots to pay to work for a few years.
Anyway, I already own X-Plane 10 and it is a quite realistic sim, I usually use it to brush up my skills before a check ride and it serves very well for that. If you are interested in aviation, I can highly recommend it. I suppose X-Plane 11 will only be better.

Quoting: manero666It would be great if Steam could give us the ability to launch wine games through the Linux Client, without switching between clients every time.
IIRC, there was some discussion about making a library that would allow windows games to communicate with native steam, but I don't know its status, nor do I remember its name.

As an Nvidia user, I have the same problem. Too many names to keep track of. If I switch to AMD, I'll have some studying to do.

Quoting: buenaventuraAbout shaders, what are they?

Shaders are little programs than run on your GPU. They replaced the fixed logic that present in the rendering pipeline of the older graphics cards (then 3D accelerators). What's a rendering pipeline? Uhm, if you really want to know more about the subject, have a study session on the internet. It's a fascinating subject, but it can be quite hard when you first start out.

Quoting: leillo1975I see the Game in my library, but when I push the install button, the Game is inmediately downloaded, but obviusly, the Game don't work.

Have you joined the beta branch? Instructions are on the game's news page.

Thanks a lot, I will try it this night. When I saw "public beta", I don't thought in passwords to activate it.

Graphics driver's have always been a bit of magic to me. I have a low end AMD card:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] [1002:9851] (rev 05) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
And I've always had trouble figuring out how to optimize my usage of it, when/if I can use AMDGPU (and/or -PRO?). Even when asking (ubuntuforums) I find it difficult to follow - I wonder if I should get some custom kernel or so? When?

I recently switched from ubuntu's repo-radeon FOSS driver to padokas to try them out and see if there was a difference, and I can't say I've noticed that much. Are these new features mainly for high end or newer graphic cards?

About shaders, what are they? I played FS2Open (Freespace2) and for a long time it ran horribly even on rock bottom settings, then someone suggested disabling GSLS-shaders and BOOM, all other settings at max and it looks stunning. Why is that?

Frankly their current UI is a pain, but in term of gaming it is from time to time very enjoyable to have such a quite game. (Just like Euro truck simulator 2 or american truck simulator).

Btw at least in France you can grab an XPlane 10 copy in a pretty metal box for 60 euros (and become a DJ for the many DVDs to insert for installation)

So, short answer to mountman (again) - I have never argued that everything should be free or that I am entitled to free stuff or whatever. I am happy about all the nice free options and good pricing systems there are. Please read again - hint, issue is "relevancy of bashing people in current article".

Quoting: HamishNo offence intended to Mr. Tyson, but it would probably be more accurate to describe him as being a popular scientist instead, given his prominence as a science communicator over his more academic work.
That is true, but I'd argue that popular science is just as important as hard (unpopular? :)) science. Shared science is the best science.

Quoting: wolfyrionWell this offer doesnt apply for existing owners and definitely not for steam users even if you buy it now on steam.

On the other hand I find their prices extremely high but I guess this game is build having in mind that ONLY pilots will buy their game since they earn a lot of $$$.

Paying $1,000 for a simulator including all their DLC's I find it a bit too much!

XP 10 has been out for years, so I wouldn't expect any discount now. I really don't get what you're saying about price, XP 10 was $80 when it fist released, so its actually dropped down to $60. I don't know if this will be a digital only price, or if they will be charging more for a DVD set though.

Laminar research haven't released any "DLC's" or other add-ons, beyond a USB stick for their products to unlock them out of demo without using a DVD, or a USB to unlock the professional version. The rest of the DLC's you see are from 3rd parties, and not all are payware as you can get plenty from here.

Wow, I'm pretty hyped for this now and I don't even know what to expect.

Based on the fact that he admires Carl Sagan and picked up his torch with "Cosmos" which was made for the purpose of inspiring younger generations of scientists by showing them the beauty of natural law, I would go out on a limb here and guess that he wants to do the exact same thing with this game, and that excites me.

It could be something that would appeal to a different kind of audience than your average gamer, and due to his fame I think he's in a unique position to try and pull off something new and beautiful that other game developers wouldn't be able to sell.

QuoteIt's (4X) a genre not too well served on Linux
Really? I kinda think 4X is one of the genres that is in pretty good shape on Linux. In the AAA department we have Civ 5, Civ: Beyond Earth, Master of Orion (2016), plus Age of Wonders 3, Warlock 2, and a whole host of indies (some good some not so much). Not that I'm complaining, the more the merrier. I'm always down for more variety.

I remember that, but it was by definition against Steams policy, so I never tried it. Unfortunately, such support would have to come from Valve.

That's the key: don't expect much from those, if you don't want to be disappointed. Or rather, if you want to be pleasantly surprised :D

I've been let down too often by such promising concepts... The only expectation I can reasonably have is this one: The game will never get out (and it would be crap anyway). I think that's called cautious optimism.

See? I don't really know how it could let me down. I was even pleasantly surprised after no man's sky came out :P

Edit: Anyone got the video playing?

I've been having some weird issues with the game running way too fast!

The text scrolls by very quickly during the video just before the prison scene, but the audio runs at normal speed. Once my character appears in the prison, he jerks around erratically and any key I press results in him running into a wall...

Anyone else had this?

I don't think they've finalized the system requirements yet, which is probably why none of the hardware/OS systems have been listed yet (or at least none I could find).
Thanks, added it in for clarity.
