GDC Europe survey shows 17% of developers plan to release Linux titles
By sarmad, 19 July 2016 at 12:23 am UTC

17% is pretty good considering the lack of marketting or interest on Valve's side, but it's most probably less than it used to be a year ago. I remember seeing roughly 20% or more of the latest released titles on Steam supporting Linux, but at this moment out of the latest 100 games released on Steam only 13 of them support Linux.

The curious tale of vanishing Linux & SteamOS ports, a status on a few of them

I'd add Telltale's Minecraft to the list. Last year a dev posted on their forums asking for beta testers. He has never replied to the thread again.

Side question: It seems like Chromebooks have been selling surprisingly well lately. Is anyone writing games for them? Would such games run on normal Linux? If they don't, could a library be written to make a normal Linux run them (or vice versa, to make a Chromebook run games for SteamOS as long as they were lightweight enough for the little thing)? Would any or all of these things be useful for general Linux gaming?

Quoting: EikeHm. We've got 25% on Steam, probably with more old than new games. 17% would, well... not be more than that.
Steam has very little presence in games outside the desktop/laptop form factor. This survey included consoles and phones, which are huge markets. So its face value before you add the needed big chunk o' salt is that if you take all the game developers on both computers (where Linux is an option) and consoles and phones (where it basically isn't), 17% of that whole field have Linux plans. Presumably if you removed the people concentrating on consoles or phones from the sample, the Linux percentage in the remaining group would be significantly higher.

Edited to add: Oh. Yeah, like JOndra91 already said.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers coming to Linux after the initial Window launch
By Purple Library Guy, 18 July 2016 at 10:56 pm UTC

Frontiers . . . every time someone mentions that word I get reminded of this Star Trek joke:
How many ears does Mr. Spock have?
Three. One on the left, one on the right, and the final, front ear.

Been playing the hell out of this for the past few weeks. Hadn't encountered any bugs but I'm glad they're still working on it.

As for graphics, I suppose you could make that a stretch goal--"If I get this much money, I will find someone who can do good art and pay them to do art stuff" kind of thing.
So, does this have sort of a Redwall vibe? Except in Redwall the critters tend to fight with weapons, where here it looks like pretty much tooth, claw, webs and stuff.
I tend to agree with Tuubi, that video tells me what basic kind of game it is but gives me no real clues whether it's a good one of its type--whether the tactical possibilities are interesting, whether the story associated is any good, what they're fighting about, whether there is anything about it that says "fantasy" other than there being intelligent animals having a war (which I suppose is vaguely fantastical but doesn't scream "fantasy" as a genre), so on and so forth.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers coming to Linux after the initial Window launch
By Janne, 18 July 2016 at 10:33 pm UTC

The original Kingdom Rush is great. Have it on both Linux and Android, and I've replayed it any number of times. Frontiers, on the other hand, feels like a warmed-up rehash with bad game balance and very uneven level quality. It's as if they gave the original game code to a group of summer interns and asked them to make a sequel.

Get the original; it's great. But don't bother with this one.

Quoting: lvlarkI've only played the free web version of Kingdom Rush over on Kongregate. I've played a bunch of TD games there, this one probably ranks second for me, after Cursed Treasure. One or two wonky bits, but overall it's pretty solid.

Yep, I'd agree with that. One of the best TD games I've ever played, second only to the awesome Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten (which combines a bit of RPG, so it's not an entirely fair comparison, but still).

That is .. more than I expected. I rather thought it will be lower than 10 %.

But maybe that is the rising support by engines. A pretty good amount anyway. It will not solve my issue though (too many games, too few of them played).

Glad the dev is still improving this game Linux-wise. With RPG's being first, Roguelikes are my 2nd most favorite type of games. Will pick this up when I can spare the money. Thanks for the news Liam.

Quoting: ElectricPrismI held off buying this because of the Early Access after Storm United going dark :(

Same exact situation here. I really liked the idea of a "Halo" on Linux but nobody ever gets on Storm United. I think that because the FPS market is so oversaturated, bots have become necessary for multiplayer-only shooters to survive.

It does seem to have a few issues after playing it

- Health spawns too quickly
- Health should not be inside the team safe area, makes camping too easy
- Maps feel too small for free for all

It's still really fun, but like a lot of Early Access games it needs balancing to fix those issues

System Shock Pre-Alpha Demo now available on Linux, nearing stretch goal
By TheRiddick, 18 July 2016 at 9:27 pm UTC Likes: 1

Ok, I put my $30 support in for this, pretty sure they can make that stretch goal. I liked the fact they made it a priority stretch goal instead of doing what other companies do, that is putting it at 500k-1m WAY down the stretch-list making it almost impossible to achieve. Thumbs-up for System Shock fellas for not doing that!

I'm hoping that once Vulkan API starts winning against DX12 and we see more support for it then we will also see more interest in making ports happen for Linux. Any company that spends all their time making DX12 for their game is NOT going to care about Linux.

Vulkan has the advantage of older Windows version support so I think it has a REAL damn good shot of becoming the king, the only way MS can stop that happening is release DX12 for older versions of Windows which we all know they will never do given how sneaky and hard they have been forcing Windows10 on people (they love their back-doors and telemetry data don't they!)

QuoteI really hope that combat isn't as messy as it is in Pillars, that was really annoying.
Why did you find it messy? Because of the real time?
I've been playing the Baldur's Gate series since forever and I felt right at home with Pillars' combat. The first thing to do though is set up autopause rules, f.e. when an enemy is sighted, dies etc.
It just felt weird, hard to explain it properly. To me having so many characters around, all happening in real time with having to pause to give commands and study the battle, it just felt like a mess.

I do need to give it another try sometime soon though.

Combat was a nightmare for me as well. But it seems that around the first or second DLC they released a patch that provided AI for the companions so that you don't need to babysit them any longer. I gave it another go recently and this time I am really enjoying it.
Yeah that was what I was waiting for to give it a proper go again, and I have been planning to. So my thoughts are probably a little out of date right now.

There are videos with Ben Lesnick reporting confidently that "Linux will be on or near Windows release" and I can't help but smirk knowing that without even a Linux demo build today, there is no way they will meet a day one launch.

Have a link to the vids of Ben ? There's that much regards SC it's hard to find anything specific.

We should see a Linux version "around launch".

Will it have the same stupid character development system as in PoE? Will it have the same stupid combat system as in PoE? Would it be possible to comfortably play it with single char?

Graphically it looks totally awesome... But why oh why do all RPGs have that same fantasy setting? Like, every single one of them? They look like friggin' CLONES! Why can't we ROLEPLAY something else for a change?

Doesn't even diehard fantasy fans get tired of this sometime?
