I was talking about the PCIe cards, you know, gpu on a pcb mini board. Not sure if that is whats happening here but not long ago they were talking about how they got a standard 980gtx running in a laptop fine. NOT USB ADAPTER.

What your suggesting will add $200 to the price tag, kinda pointless.

Quoting: TheRiddickYou talking about those graphics cards on a pcie stick things laptops use? Yeah that would be a good solution for steam machines...

Yeah. It's a $200 external graphics card enclosure + USB hub. The new Alpha R2 has the proprietary amplifier port for it while the Steam Machine R2 doesn't.

What sucks is that the new Alienware Steam Machine doesn't have a graphics amplifier port, while the new Alpha does. Yet the graphics amplifier does unofficially work on Linux and there were a few kernel commits a few months back for support too. This gives the Alpha a very big advantage over the Steam Machine--support for upgradable graphics, if you buy the graphics amp. You can even put a GTX 1080 inside the amplifier.

IMO, it makes more sense to buy an Alpha R2 then put SteamOS or another distribution on it instead of buying the Steam Machine at this point.

960? Come ON! the 1060 is out, at least have that in it! And I agree a I7 is a bit high end for JUST a gaming rig, i5 4core is plenty. I would say go AMD, but they haven't got their Zen shit together yet and we don't know if that will be cheaper or not.

I feel honestly that this new generation of Nvidia cards could breathe new life into Steam Machines. Equipping them with GTX 1060s which should have the power of a 970-980 but more compact and less power consumption... I just hope they stop kitting these things out with overpowered CPUs, i7s are nice, but if you're trying to make an affordable mass-market console, it adds little in terms of power/performance ratio.

Black Mesa developer shoots down anti-Linux troll, confirms Linux version is in progress
By slaapliedje, 9 July 2016 at 10:04 pm UTC

I have to admit I'm guilty to replying to that troll, and was also in the Mad Max Linux thread (which if it really is coming to Linux, I need it to so I can finish playing it!)

My favorite comment was the one quoted here about him also playing the Linux supported games in Linux... so.. you play them, but don't want more ports? Clearly an insane individual, or as stated some sort of Bot. I had pointed out several times in the thread that we didn't need the +1, because the whole thread was started by the Devs! Most 'could you port to Linux' threads are started by us as a community, I originally just wanted to thank them for porting to Linux and doing it before the port to macOS, which is the only platform I mostly find silly to port games to (especially the high end demanding ones, since as Palmer Lucky so pointedly remarked "We'll support them when Apple releases some decent hardware")

Speaking of that, it'd be kind of interesting, since most market share 'studies' are done with 'desktop' in mind, makes one wonder if they checked market share on 'gaming' computers. Would we actually have a larger share over Mac users?

I'm happy they've confirmed the port regardless of the troll. Granted would have been nice if they'd released it during the sale :D But then 20 bucks for it seems worth it anyhow.

Planet Centauri, another 2D sandbox RPG with crafting available for Linux
By neowiz73, 9 July 2016 at 10:02 pm UTC

I bought this about a month ago when I seen it released, it has been running great on Linux. I like the way this game has a very similar background change to Terraria based on the biome type. But this has more tile types and options similar to Starbound.
Although keep in mind it is in the early stages, right now the only way of getting the other tiles that are not listed to craft are from this machine you can build, which you have to add the based tile types into the machine, e.g. stone, dirt and sand, then randomly you get an assortment of tiles with a random quantity of 1 to 6 or so.

The random boss mobs are interesting, my first hour of play I had to deal with one of these. not that easy with basic gear lol. You can upgrade your gear with further level qualities after you craft them. Plus your gear has slots for Runes that you find from random drops, mainly from boss mobs. you are able to combine similar runes to gain a new higher tier of the same rune.

The most interesting thing is you can play the game as a creature in the game and gain levels as that creature to unlock new abilities etc. If you die transformed as a creature you don't drop souls (souls are a unique resource for upgrading items).

Mounts are not available yet.

Not all the gear types are available in the game yet. I had empty slots that I did not have available gear for, after many hours of play including crafting max level dragon armor.

I've beaten the Dragon boss, apparently it hints at possibly rebuilding your space ship and eventually there will be other planets... so something closer to Starbound in the works?

Dying Light runs pretty well for me on an Nvidia GTX 760 in my SteamOS HTPC. Had to turn some settings down but that video probably isn't maxed out either.

Needless to say it also runs great on my Arch Linux desktop with a GTX 980 ti.

Throw a 1060 in and I might bite for $750. I built all five of my current steam machines, but I'll probably buy a premade soon to keep my daughters busy for a couple of hours each day after school in my office.

@rontgen about HRTF, sure, but let's hope it will be in open-source fashion (i.e expanding OpenAL's functionality). It would be great to see Valve and Oculus cooperate on this.

About Black Mesa, for someone who never played Half Life (that played little actually), and does not understand the fascination about HL2, episode 1 and 2 (I think), I am really happy that is coming to Linux.

I think there is another remake (the new source engine?) but at the time it seemed that Black Mesa would be better.

I am planning to build my first gaming linux pc hopefully soon, and I would be delighted to play Black Mesa as first game.

Only hope I will be able to use hrtf for sound if the sound allows it.

It would be definitely worth it. Maybe with all the craze of Vive and Rift, positional audio via stereo headsets will get a boost too.

Cheers

In absolute terms, yes. But it is the size of a Mac Mini, $200 cheaper than a top-end Mac Mini, and a much more capable gaming machine than a top-end Mac Mini. Yes, I just compared it to a Mac Mini, and regret nothing.

I don't own the Alienware Steam machine but I do own the Alienware Alpha and installed SteamOS on it so I could dual boot both Windows and SteamOS. It is a pretty good system, I'm glad the newer ones use a full blown graphics card so now you can upgrade the GPU too.

I love my steam machine. It's the 8gb/1tb model and I think it's brilliant. It was what ended up leading me to this site and to be honest it's made me want to learn more about Linux and maybe one day build my own rig (in the far future when I actually might have money) it's fantastic for someone like me who enjoys tinkering with the controls but still getting the ease of use of a console

Starbound to finally leave Early Access on 22nd July

they finally released the storyline content in the unstable - testing build on steam. I didn't think they planned to release story content on the test build according to multiple posts they made the last couple of months. So I stopped playing after I reached the starting planet. If you have an older character you will still have all the things you've finished and unlocked... although You may miss out on some new interesting content. Unless there is a forced wipe of old data.
But if you have a character from the old game, I'd highly advise deleting and remaking if they don't do a forced wipe. Not just for storyline reasons, but it very well could cause some buggy issues.

their patch notes show that there will be a character and world wipe on release of 1.0.

they brought back the hunger mechanic with the "survival" (which was the old Normal mode) and "hardcore" difficulty settings. Casual does not have hunger enabled.
The whole game starts off completely different now, with a whole cutscene to boot. it's really kind of cheesy but in a cool and interesting way. You can build a crew for your ship now, that each crew member has added benefits. plus vehicles and Mechs are acquirable, the planet biomes have some new tweaks like the lava planet isn't mostly liquid lava now, it is mainly magma rock with a lot of lava pools, plus new creatures for this planet type. the amount of new content is staggering. and they plan to add more in the coming months.

I think a Linux server for this game would be great. although I'm not sure if i'd have a lot of time to play on it though. i'm a father of 2 boys that have special needs, i tend to have to go afk a lot, at odd and sudden times. plus there are certain mods I like to use, like the hair styles, colors and if starbound side stories is available by the time 1.0 is released I want to try and play with that enabled from the start, because SSS has a larger array of planet types and biomes.
