Natural Selection 2 adds a new map and smarter bots
By Liam Dawe, 7 June 2016 at 7:52 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestPlayed it last week after having had the game on hold for a longt time. Multiple crashes in addition to new bugs (like flickering UI/map, freeze of keyboard controls). Opengl-drivers for linux is still listed as "beta" in the game option, and this shows. Got so frustrated that I uninstalled the game.
Same old story then, what a damn shame.

Apple would love to dominate the market (well, any market). It's definitely not for lack of trying. They've got the smallish but extremely lucrative hipster and yuppie markets in their pocket though, so they do just fine.

Quoting: titiThe better question on this early state is if the developers have cross plattform development in mind !
They're developing for PS4, xbone and Windows so yes, they do. And this isn't the first cross-platform game they've done, they know what's involved. I think it's always better to ask if Linux is specifically one of the target platforms, just like Liam did.

Like getting scared? Some Horror games you have to check out on Linux & SteamOS
By Plintslîcho, 7 June 2016 at 7:07 pm UTC

I'm not really into horror games but I played a little of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and I think they are worth mentioning when talking about scary games for Linux. The game I've played most so far is SOMA though (haven't finished it yet). Of all the mentioned games I like SOMA best for its setting. It isn't super scary but I still find it pretty atmospheric.

I'd be interested in Alien: Isolation because I really like the (first three) movies. But unfortunately it's Steam only. After watching some gameplay videos, I have to say that my interest has also dwindled greatly as it seems that the player is mainly walking/running from A to B and back to A after picking up some new tool and then repeat the whole procedure from the beginning again after picking up yet another new tool.

I think the horror game I've enjoyed most was Resident Evil back on the PS1.

The most disturbing game I've played was DAYZ (the original ArmA II mod).

XCavalypse, clean up a zombie apocalypse with an excavator now on Linux
By GustyGhost, 7 June 2016 at 5:28 pm UTC

Quoting: tuubiAww, I thought it would be about actually cleaning up the city afterwards, maybe learning about the event in the process like the topic led me to believe/hope, not repetitive zombie-slaughter with heavy machinery. This could have been an interesting and innovative mix of exploration and excavator simulation. Of course I wouldn't have minded if there was some aftermath-related action involved, like a bit of running from zombie stragglers, but this is just... meh.

Same. I thought it was going to be in the same vein as Viscera Cleanup Detail where the player is tasked with cleaning the aftermath of other game genre's battles.

I think Vulkan is not that likely because of the platforms they target: Windows, Xbox, Playstation. Only if they want to support Win7 with a modern engine, Vulkan comes into picture, but they likely use an existing engine. Big chance that if there will be a Linux version, they put Virtual Programming on the job. Then it depends on wether VP have time and see business in it.

Quoting: cxphergmailcomHeck, i have a Windows license for free (Windows 10 Pro) and i don't even use it.
Heck, considering the Microsoft's tricks to upgrade everyone to Win10, I believe not only it should be free but they should pay users instead.

Quoting: cxphergmailcomUpdate : Is it under rootoverrides for the FS? Just as an update, when i try to install this, it says the platform isn't supported.
Check the update history, no news still except the added metascore. I think the save path overrides is still too little for the evidence that the game is going to Linux, configuration options, on the other hand, is a strong one (and there are none). But the engine was ported once for Shadow Warrior and it was a damn good port overall bringing it to HR wouldn't be problematic.

Quoting: EhvisThese days an interesting question would be whether the game is developed primarily in Vulkan. Or even DX12. Both should make the porting effort a whole lot easier.
There's probably a strong chance they're using a version of the same in-house engine that their later SR games ran on. They could be adding a Vulkan backend though, who knows.

It's nice when there is an easy communication like that, too often developers just ignore the question or say that they might do it in the future while they have already decided not to do it.

YES and I would love to have Tomb Raider 1 - 4, Legend, Anniversary and Underworld ;)

I would be happy if I can play Anniversary in Linux. My first played Tomb Raider was for SEGA Saturn (I played again two months ago and it works!!!). I would like to replay the same story with better graphics in Linux again. Are the Feral Gods hearing me?

So they'll port the sequel to Guardian of Light, but not the game itself? That sucks, since I actually have that game as a leftover from my Windows days, but am left unable to play it without jumping through Wine hoops.

Quoting: ShabbyXCompletely true. A few months ago some apparently famous guy was showing equal performance between vulkan opengl 4.5. Opengl is very powerful, it's just terribly used. Vulkan is just a more modern reimplemention of the same stuff as opengl.
The problem is that most of opengl engines are object-oriented where the rendering loop does look something like this

render()
{
    for entity in entities
    {
        glBindTexture(entity.texture);
        glBindFramebuffer(entity.framebuffer);
        glBindVertexBuffer(entity.vertexbuffer);
        glUseProgram(entity.program);
        glDepthFunc(entity.depth);
        ...

        glDraw(...);
    }
}

You will notice that there a lot a state changes done by the driver for every object. To avoid that, we need to get rid of OOP to make our engines data-oriented (not to be confused with data-driven which is a different thing) where you sort/pack data in the following order

framebuffers -> global states -> programs (shaders) -> textures -> vertex buffer

The rendering loop then looks like this

render()
{
    for framebuffer in framebuffers
    {
        glBindFramebuffer(framebuffer);

        for global in framebuffer.globals
        {
            glDepthFunc(global.depth);
            glEnable(...);

            for program in global.programs
            {
                glUseProgram(program);

                for texture in program.textures
                {
                    glBindTexture(texture)

                    for vertexbuffer in texture.vertexbuffers
                    {
                        glBindBuffer(vertexbuffer);
                        glDraw(...);
                    }
                }
            }
        }
    }
}

Now, Vulkan has real advantages over OpenGL: Finer control over memory consumption, clean api, same api on mobile, less bloat (you only implement what you need), SPIR, ...
