Quoting: slaapliedjeI still think that after all this time, all games with a multiplayer aspect would have the functionality built in. Consider an MMO where if you aren't within a certain distance, your group can't hear you. If for example in something like ArmA, you had to whisper to ambush your enemies, whether they are people or AI. I think one of the Splinter Cell games had this option. Adds to the Immersion.

I think Unturned works this way

we need better linux user calculations. just for example. %2 of 100.000 linux users in 2015 is maybe lesser than % 1 of 500.000 of linux users. And we have to calculate Wine users too. so wine should create user survey.

Quoting: NyamiouThe number of Linux users doesn't matter, what matters is how much money they have in their pockets and how much money they are willing to spend. There is a lot of Steam users that only play one game, and often it's a free to play game, those guys don't matter much. The reasons we get so many games right now is that in terms of money spend on new games (especially outside of the blockbusters) we are more close to 5% than 1% and porting to Linux have become less expensive and easier.

Quoting: dmantioneSteamDB has the answers: The game with the most concurrent users, by far, on Steam is Dota 2, which is indeed free to play. So yes, free games can be a factor in ruïning statistics for which platform is most interresting. On the other hand, we have no reason to assume that Linux gamers do not play free games, in fact, we are used to free software.

I agree that the number of Linux users doesn't matter and that the top 10 games has an influence of the real number of Linux users, but the trend is still interesting to see. It's a bit like distrowatch: we know it's not the real numbers, but the protocol is the same since so much time, that you can extract trends from the curves.

Interesting statistics!

I've got a question about it... I don't know how the peak of concurrent users number was taken, but if it was taken the same day the Steam statistics went out, we might have a problem here.

I'm pretty sure that if we display the curves of the peaks of concurrent users overtime, we would not see a straight line, but a bumpy one, depending on the day in the week. Meaning that if the statistics came out on a Sunday, the 1% of it would be quite different than during some day in the middle of the week.

So if it's not the case, it might be better to do an average of the peaks around the day where the statistics came out.

Looking at the data it does seem that so far Linux didn't manage to bite much into the market share of other OSes. But it's also not surprising given that we're still lacking a lot of AAA titles and also suffer from many games performing worse in Linux than Windows. My guess is that there won't be too many converts from Windows until this is sorted, and that means we're likely stuck with the 1% share for a while. The good news is that the absolute growth we are seeing might convince more publishers to invest into porting their games, which (together with Vulkan) might help sorting the two obstacles over time.

PS: I never got the survey for Linux either. I am often getting it for Windows when I boot that to play MMOs (most of which don't even use Steam)...

The March drop is interesting. Not only did the peak users fall, but so did Linux share. I wonder if it was due to some bigger Windows-only releases in that month?

Looking at it from a business/enterprising point of view, you have one market which is expected to plateau and another which has plenty of room for growth. The latter isn't necessarily an unattractive target.

Me too. And already has a year and a half I'm using Steam on Linux.

Quoting: wojtek88I feel like I need to clarify one thing regarding my opinion - I know that Feral may not be the one to blame for performance. But Feral is the one who announces release, and Feral is the one who makes game available for us. And there was no information about known performance issues or they did not say that the game is released, but there is performance update that we should expect. Instead, we have a product, that seems to be final according to all the advertisements, but is not according to performance.
And I just expect those issues to be solved, and Feral needs to take part in fixing process. Even if nVidia is the one to blame.
If this is fixed and performance is comparable to Windows, then I will be happy to give them my money for the full price.

But sadly, currently I have an impression that we have a half product.

No worries, I was not pointing at you by any mean, I just wanted to clarify who's doing what as far as pure performance is concerned, and nVidia is a factor we should not overlook. Their monopoly doesn't encourage them to push things forward and it's a real shame at the time. As their hardware is included in every Steam hardware produced as of now, their Linux drivers should be top priority... But obviously, they're not.

When I played the game in Wine ages ago the most demanding sections were:

Waterfalls by the wolf den
Shanty Town

And one other place I can't remember. It did seem to coincide with those alpha effects.

Even now for example if you go to the campfire by the wolf den near the beginning segments (can't remember the name of the location sorry) and look at the waterfall you'll see a massive FPS drop. If you look slightly in either direction so the waterfall is off screen it picks back up again. Only thing I can guess is that there's a stall somewhere in the pipeline with those effects.

In the benchmark at least that only gained me a couple of fps. Does it make a larger difference in-game?

I used the 0.0.1 release during a WoW session and it seemed to work fine. Granted it didn't have game detection at the time, but I wonder if said game detection supports games running in Wine.
