Master of Orion officially confirmed for Linux & SteamOS by Wargaming

It's hard to make a turn-based 4x strategy game look "exciting" in a screenshot. Look at the screenshots for Civilization V. It looks pretty dull, but it's one of the greatest games ever made.
I love Civ V. You can find screenshots of strategy games that look at least a little bit exciting. Example, http://masteroforion.com/media/21 Anyhow, I looked into this more and have wishlisted it. I never played any of the previous games.

Thanks for the tip!

Assuming they can deliver on all they promise, then this sounds like exactly my kind of favorite game-type.

I haven't played Planescape: Torment yet, and actually ended up getting a free copy of this game due to backing Bard's Tale 4. Though I have no clue if that entailed early access or not.

Not that it matters, I have almost no time to play games lately :(, though I did spend almost an entire day playing Elite: Dangerous (I know, I have rotted my brain by booting into Windows.... )

Yeah! Nothing says "you should take Linux more seriously in the future" like stealing the game and extremely low sales.

Looks good.
I have beta access but it's hard for me to get into it knowing all character data is going to be wiped before the release though. But once it releases I plan on playing this a lot.

Also, I hope they add keyboard movement, I never liked clicking to tell my character where to go in RPGs.

This is surprising and exciting! I always liked MOO and spent countless hours back in the day.

Hey Wargaming, how about a Linux version of WoWs?

I'm looking forward to it. It'd be nice to have a decent MMO in Linux.

Go ahead and pirate all you want. Just don't think the developer will ever know about your noble act of defiance.

Telling them directly what you think of the way things worked out (or not) might just be a bit more effective. But then again, mailing them isn't very likely to get you the game for free...

Hmm . . . kind of looks like it's going to be MOO 2 with a modern UI and, presumably although it looks like that part isn't finished yet, some spiffed up graphics. I can work with that. I kind of wish Civilization: Beyond Earth had just done that with Alpha Centauri . . .

I'm pretty well done with kickstarting stuff, and I don't really care for episodic games, but ..... that looks pretty cool.

Coming from someone who never played the older ones, I'm interested. If it looks like it'll have fun multiplayer, I'm very interested. I don't have any 4X games right now that I'm not done with.

Homefront: The Revolution gamespot video looks good, but it will feature microtransactions
By HadBabits, 27 January 2016 at 3:54 pm UTC Likes: 2

Disclaimer: Not trying to kill anyone's buzz, but I am generally a critical person :P

I'm pretty turned off when a $60 game has the balls to start playing the "Please, sir, can I have some more?" gambit. Though considering 'year of free DLC' it might be justifiable, though I'd wait until finding out what this DLC is exactly to make that call. That said, such a model could be a preferable since the alternative of paid DLC maps and such in a multiplayer focused game would split the community. It was also stated that nothing is exclusive to those who pay, the micro-transactions anyway.

However, I still think it's quite a slippery slope to support developers making games with free to play models that aren't actually free. Especially since there's no doubt that such models have to make a challenge curve to incentivize players to part with their money. If I'm paying $60 for a game I want a proper experience curved accordingly. They say it's just for people who don't have time, but such a statement deepens my fear of how much this has affected the development of the game (and if you check out the history of said development it's quite murky in itself.

And personally, I prefer either a good competitive shooter or a linear single player one (Wolfenstein: The New Order was a blast btw <3). This whole open world co-op thing leaves me feeling rather uninterested, not to mention that it reeks of following trends, as it'll likely mean a lackluster narrative and bland character, if any. This could partly be because I'm an anxious twat who resents being forced to cooperate with people who aren't in the same room

I may still get the game if it's good, but I'm certainly going to do my research beforehand (as if we penguins don't need to do that already :P).

Exciting news! I lost count of the numbers I put into MoO 2. I do hope they will polish the looks a little, though. Strategy or not, but good looks aren't a crime. ;)

Quoting: oldrocker99I'd love it if they released free copies of Planescape:Torment in a similar manner.

Considering that, AFAIK, WotC/Hasbro is the current rights holder of Planescape: Torment, not inXile, I don't think that's going to happen.

(Me, I'm still sore that they let the Planescape setting, as in the pen & paper thing, die. It hasn't even been renewed for D&D 3e, let along 4 or 5. Hell, I kinda wished there was an official Pathfinder conversion of Planescape, but that's just a pie in the sky.)

Quoting: Shmerlhttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nectargamestudios/project-resurgence/description

I second that recommendation.

Ooohhhh, I think I now see why Valve chose this and Portal 2 to be the SteamBox gift titles :O Normally one would want two great games that are new to the platform, but failing that they ingeniously picked an old game and a game that won't be available on said platform for months to round things out :P

Seriously though, what a goof on Valve's part. I wonder how many SteamBox owners got sour over that (I certainly would be). And I wish Psyonix would be a bit more transparent. It always annoys me when devs get all tight lipped; giving the impression of snubbing the community, either out of sloth or snootiness.

Another game I Kickstarted. I'll be happy if a Linux version is available on release; they certainly mentioned Linux on the page. It may be like Wasteland 2, which gave free copies of the ancient original to backers long before the new version came out, cross-platform the day of release. I'd love it if they released free copies of Planescape:Torment in a similar manner.

Not that I'm holding my breath waiting for that to happen ...

Like with all our Steam release and Steam Early Access announcements, I'm not going to mention a store it's not even on yet.

It has sense.

Thanks for clarifying, Liam.

This one has : "Steam, RPG, Early Access, Crowdfunding".

There's another tag seen on some articles , "DRM-Free" that I don't see on this.

Happens with this game, and others. It seems the articulists have much information about Steam's releases than other's stores.

I don't find playing alpha or beta versions of story intensive games like RPGs to be a good idea. It's spoilery and ruins the final experience which is likely to be different form the pre-release version. So not a big deal. Wait for the release and enjoy the game then.

If it's not pay to win, can't they just release a series of mini-DLCs - like they do in Saints Row - instead? Just to have a purchase nagging inside the game - no matter how discrete (let's face it, they're not gonna hide it too well) - is just so... Cheap. And breaks immersion.

What's wrong with the mini-DLCs? If it's fully optional anyway?

Glad to hear Linux is being supported. I'm going to be very cautious about this title, though, after the bitter pill that was MoO3.

Quoting: KeyrockAs someone who gives zero ****s about early access, this doesn't bother me at all, so long as we get day 1 Linux support for the final release. I do understand how it might bother other people who want to beta test this, though.

This.

I don't like early access. I burned myself out on Kerbal Space Program long before the official release, and I still haven't played the release even though I've seen there are some pretty cool things that didn't exist the last time I played it. That was a lesson learned - wait for the actual release before playing a game.

I absolutely get that Linux users who backed at the beta-test levels would be annoyed though - there was never any mention that the Linux version would be later, or not available for beta access. That's always the gamble with crowd funding though. I've been burned enough times on the crowd funding now that I don't get too emotional about it. I also don't crowd fund things any more.

Quoting: adolsonThe same thing happened with Wasteland 2, did it not? I backed this because it's Torment... Though I fully expect slight disappointment, as what made the original such a hit was the characters and writing and setting, and from what I've seen, there's not going to be any of that in this new one. I still think it'll be a good game, though, and I very well could be wrong about that stuff.

It is annoying that Kickstarted games go available to the general public earlier than some backers could get the game, but oh well, whatever. I don't Kickstart things anymore, so that annoyance will end for me before too long.

The original was amazing. I remember buying it off a $10 rack at a department store. I didn't know anything about it, but I saw it was based on AD&D so I thought I'd give it a go. I fired it up and thought, "A floating skull? How cheesy." Played for a bit, died, ended up waking up back at the mortuary and being surprised that the game handled this event smoothly as something that was supposed to happen. After a couple of hours I was starting to get that feeling that I was playing something special. By the end I was in awe of how good the story was, and how effective the game had been at transferring me into the role of the Nameless One. I've never played another RPG that was able to immerse me like PST.
