Editorial: The First Failed Kickstarter Projects Of 2015
By Nyamiou, 4 January 2015 at 5:25 pm UTC

Well of all the projects I have backed on Kickstarter 15% have failed, they fall into two categories :
- The people working on the project weren't competent enough
- Some of the people behind the project just took their share of the money and go away
And they all have one thing in common, problems were never mentioned before the final update (if there is a final update, sometime it's the absence of updates for a long time that give away the fact that the project is dead).

It's most of the time hard to predict if a project will fail, my advice is that unless you can be 100% sure that the project will succeed be always aware that the project can fail and so never put too much money on it.

Also when a project fail, ask for a refund if you want one because if you don't ask you have zero chance of having one.

No, Final Fantasy XIII-2 Probably Isn't Coming To Linux

Quoting: cutncheeseJust a wierd FYI, I logged into steam today and found FFXIII-2 was installable on my linux box. The install is 9mb and leaves an empty install directory....but seams to me like there could be something more to these rumors :o
Like the article states, it doesn't matter.

It's due to OpenVR. Nothing more.

No, Final Fantasy XIII-2 Probably Isn't Coming To Linux
By Cyba.Cowboy, 4 January 2015 at 2:31 pm UTC

Quoting: HamishNot to mention the fact that any game series with the word "Final" in its title that still manages to reach the number thirteen does need to be questioned, even if only just a little...\

The title exists because at the time of Final Fantasy (as in, the original), Squaresoft was almost bankrupt... Final Fantasy was a last-ditch attempt at a successful, which obviously paid off.

Of course, you would think that Squaresoft would have changed the name once they started making money again... But I guess not.

Whilst I doubt the authenticity of this claim, it would be interesting to see if anyone else has experienced this and I'd be happy to be proven wrong...

I really felt like I slaughtered this game, but I actually enjoyed it a lot! I was probably pissed because I had to play it in Virtualbox, I think thats why I was so negative about it.

Quoting: codyaj1995You should check out Sauerbraten if you like this game. (it is the cube2 engine) Very fun!

Oh, Sauerbraten uses the Cube 2 engine? Thats where I heard that engine before! I knew I had heard of it before, but I didn't know in what way.

Quoting: frostworkwould have voted for openmw as best oss game, but stk ist great too :}

imho it would be nice if you would split the categories for the next award into
- oss
- AAA
- indie (closed)

We need more categories than that. I think we should follow the common practise and have categories based on properties of the game, type "best multi-player game", "best RPG", "best strategy game", "shooter of the year" and so forth, as well as the suggested "open source of the year". But an open-source game could and should also potentially be nominated in other categories, if they are good enough. I just think it is very right of us Linux peeps to have a dedicated OSS category. They deserve that spotlight.

It's also quite common to have categories that celebrates artistic elements of the game, like "best artwork", "best voice actors", and so forth. Those categories may very likely contain nominations from both major distributors, indies and oss.

And Sauerbraten isn't the only game that uses the Cube2 engine. The built in editor is great fun when you have the right kind of people playing. Nothing like playing capture the flag when you can add and remove walls and pitfalls.

GOG's Installer Encryption Proving to be Difficult for Linux Users
By , 3 January 2015 at 7:43 pm UTC

Quoting: ntfwc
Quoting: TerynFirst it was the lack of always providing tarballs because the Lucasarts games have a EULA that they packed into the .debs for Ubuntu and Mint. They were ultimately pointless, because it likely still could have been inserted into a script for the tarballs as in a .deb just as easily. (eularead=1, anybody?)

This could be related. Reminds me of the EULA prompt for the Microsoft font package.

So, this could have more to do with legal reasons.

Sorry, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've been keeping up on GOG's own forums, and the one admin who's said anything seems to imply otherwise.

This is the general discussion thread:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/tech_gog_new_windows_installer_a_technical_thread
Here's the post where the admin first speaks up in the discussion thread:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/on_gnulinux_has_anyone_be_able_to_extract_the_rar_innosetup_installers/post116

This is the technical solutions thread, where only discussing tech solutions are encouraged:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/tech_gog_new_windows_installer_a_technical_thread

Here's a thread suggesting that bypassing this password (as Linux users must) may be considered reverse engineering, and is no good with GOG's upcoming policy changes:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/please_fix_your_user_agreement_to_allow_reverse_engineering_and_tinkering_when_its_fair_use_to_ret

Just keeping everyone informed. At least look at the admin's post and see what he's intended with this change. If this is a bad move for Linux (and the few Windows users who manually unpack their installers for whatever reason), everyone deserves to figure that out for themselves.

I totally agree with everyone saying that you invest in an idea. I always loved the idea of crowd-sourcing and I think it's a way better method for getting the game YOU want (to support) than the traditional publisher model.

I mean, if you're really into the AAA-titles and you love great graphics and rather the same gameplay in each and every iteration, crowd-sourcing probably will not be your cup of tea. (I say this without any offense, just to be clear!)

If you'd like to try out new gameplay mechanics crowd-sourcing is a good way to support many new ideas, that are simply not being made with the traditional model, because they are risky and hence may cost a lot money, not to mention their initial cost vs. "copy/paste features".

Regarding the advertising: I think that people today are used to literally few to none consequences. If you fall for an advertisement and the endproduct doesn't deliver, you have to learn to be more careful. That's part of life, learning that hitting a cactus with your bare hand hurts.

It's not like you're forced to invest thousands upon thousands of bucks, but if you're greedy and invest in the wrong idea, well... shit happens.

Like was said numerous times: It's an investment and those always come with a risk. That's the nature of an investment. If this is not what you want, just don't use it.

Most games/product can be bought later on, if successfully funded and developed/created anyway.

What I do not like about kickstarter, are empty promises like when I support a game that claims to support Linux (at a certain milestone) and it's funded (along with the milestone) and then they release the game for Windows and maybe MacOS and are done with it, because the engine they used or some library is not compatible with Linux etc.

That's something I really hate, but I learned my lesson from it too :)

Quoting: EKRboiGTA 5 would be sweet! It coming to Linux might be the only way I would buy it. I'm interested in it but 4 was a huge let down to me.

Funny, GTA 4 was the best installation of the game for me so far. Although I really loved the others, GTA 4 had the best characters and story for me. The engine wasn't optimized for PC tho, but my PC could handle it.

Anyway, time to guess/wish: Saints Row IV
