really? valve only did deals with 2 anti cheat providers to support linux, everything else that work just happens to work and not be blocked.

Quoting: Cyba.CowboyValve really need to address this... Most (all?) of the "anti-cheat" systems natively support Linux-based operating systems - but almost all of the developers behind them flat-out refuse to implement their own "anti-cheat" systems for gaming under Linux.

Quoting: kaktuspalmeWhat makes it a success compared to creating your own HTPC:5. it need to be a silent device as well
1. Standardized hardware, meaning, game creators can create custom profiles like they do for the steam deck.
2. You don't have to build it yourself
3. Probably competitive pricing
4. Perfect support for things like CEC and bluetooth wake up. Turning on the steam controller turns on the console and the TV.

i know a lot of people hate the pratice of making exclusive games, but hating something dont change the facts, and the facts are: exclusive games sell hardware.
im not saying i support this pratice or we should support.
the issue is not that exclusives dont sell, the issue is that valve isnt in the market of making games, they barely make anything and when then do its all in the same genres of moba or shooters.
if they were more like nintendo having an famous franchise in each genre or made exclusivity deals like that, they would sell a lot.
how do you explain that playstation 4 sold hundreds of millions? not to mention, steamdeck have much more games than nintendo switch, and AAA games while switch barely have any AAA beside nintendo own games, but switch sell in a month what the deck sell in a year, how do you explain that?
you are saying that the market of HTPC is small , but you ignore WHY its small, if the price was the only reason then switch shouldnt be outselling the steam deck that much.

Quoting: CatKillerThere wouldn't be much demand for it with exclusives, either, and neither Valve nor Steam customers like exclusives.

Quoting: CatKillerThe market would be "people that want an HTPC but don't want to set up an HTPC." That's pretty small - HTPCs are pretty easy to set up.the issue is that you are seeing this as "the market of htpc" not, the market of gaming devices for the living room.

since the steam machines floped, i dont think that using this branding is a good idea.
since the deck was a success and the dock help tracks the demand for a living room experinece, the only logical name for an dedicated home console is:
the steam duck!
jokes aside im not sure there is demand for it without exclusives, but if valve can do that, it will create an warfare scenario for other console vendors.

i womnder if there is demand for it...
xbox barely can sell with temporary exclusives, and valve already comited to not making exclusives, on the other hand, not to mention most steam players already have an pc where they can game, but who knows steam have more games than xbox, so it might be enticing.
maybe if its cheaper than purchasing an gaming pc with similiar specs, but then we have no guarantee people wont install windows on it.
unless valve make the hardware incompatible somehow, like with drivers...
another thing to consider: if they will be making their own hardware, then they have no reason to limit thenselves to pc compatible parts, so if they want they can for example, put an gigantic cpu, gpu or apu, that wont fit anywhere else, and cant be replaced for an off the shelf component, that will ensure to developers that all players have the same hardware, ensure that people will rely on their drivers, and they can even future proof the hardware more than on a desktop, since you can fit more transistors in more space, so even when the hardware get smaller it wont make this hardware obsolete any time soon.
one mistake valve should not make again is rely on thirdy parties to make the hardware, without first making an floor of quality with their own hardware.
anyway i doubt they can make an hardware more powerfull than sony or microsoft for a similiar price, unless we count on developers targeting PS5 base instead of pro and valve having some hardware as powerfull as the PS5 pro that developers can rely on.

Quoting: pilkOh, neat stuff. Maybe more handhelds with SteamOS instead of garbo Windows 11. Maybe the return of the Steam Machine (I think it'd work nowadays thanks to Proton and the deck.)

Quoting: Purple Library GuyQuoting: elmapulthis number may be good, but the number of games on steam grow much faster than the number of games that valve is able to test, so the % of games that run on linux get smaller and smaller everyday.Well . . . the % of games that officially run on Steam Deck.
Proton just keeps getting developed, so the % that run in fact on Linux, on a normal form factor PC, probably keeps growing.
