Valve overhauls the Steam Store with new categories, hubs and filtering

Quoting: TheRiddickYeah the categories while nice, are extremely broad stroke and meaning of the word.
Possible games are trying to target all categories now so basically call themselves things they really aren't at the core.

I'd like to see a feature that lets the community vote on what a games category should be and when it gets to a certain high number it can influence it for change.. I dunno.

I'd like to see the ability to save previous page when you click on a title so the back button works better and actually takes you back instead of an approximate.
The community would just troll and do something akin to "review bombing" whenever something controversial happens around/within that game.

And regardless of whether their frustration is justified, moving a game in an unpopular category to effectively "cancel" it, is not the solution.

Linux user share on Steam continues rising — highest for years again

Quoting: BlackBloodRumWhile it's nice to see the linux user count go up, I can't help but wonder if many of those decks are people like me who have both the deck and a desktop linux computer.

In my case, I still use both for gaming on steam. So, in a situation like this, statistically depending on how it was counted it would appear that either:

a) There's now two distros counted for the user (Both percentages could go up)
b) That steam lost a distro user and gained a steam deck user (or vice versa, only one percentage goes up, while causing the other to drop)

In any case, it would need to be clarified as it may artificially make it appear that either you have more Linux users on steam than in actuality or that some distros are losing ground, when in fact they're just not being counted because the user has two distros being used on steam and only one of those is counted.
The Deck is popular among the masses, not just among Linux users. Since we make up a small minority of the masses, I could only assume that most Deck users were not Linux users originally.
So I guess for most Deck users, it's actually a +1 for Linux and +1 for Windows (or to a much lesser extent Mac OS), rather than a +2 for Linux.

There's definitely an overlap there, but I don't think it really matters all that much, and that most are real new users.
And even then, this is not a new problem at all. There's probably more people out there that have both a desktop and a laptop than there are with a PC + Deck. And they likely use the same OS on both devices. (And that's actually the case for me too, plus I'm waiting on a Deck also)

AYANEO to have their own AYANEO OS based on Linux

Quoting: WildCoderI'm torn. I wish they'd work with Valve to improve Steam OS rather that go their own way. But on the other end it might be easier to bring non steam games to this device, maybe something Valve can bring onto steam OS later on.
Anyway I would rather see more cooperation at the OS level...
SteamOS will always be biased towards Steam.

IMO it's normal and expected to eventually see a "neutral" distro.

IF there's to be only one distro across all handhelds, it just cannot be biased towards any store...
But anyway that's just theory, it's much more likely tehre will be different distros for different devices each taking advantage of their respective hardware's capabilities better than any standard/generic distro ever could; and that's ok.
Let's just hope they will be open source so that things can be shared and wheels won't be wastefully reinvented from scratch multiple times.

Some Steam Decks ship with an x2 SSD instead of an x4 SSD

Quoting: pete910
Quoting: TermyBut changing it an hoping no one will notice is bound to be perceived as deceptive and not taking the customer serious...

Indeed,

Imagine if ford changed one of their engines from a V8 to a straight 4 ! There would be hell to pay.

Whilst this is an extreme it's the same principal and should be be illegal without it being WELL publicized. Especially to those that have pre ordered.

I agree with what you said but there are two issues (just in my opionion, IDK how the law works in this regard):
- Nobody pre-ordered it. Technically, we just reserved a place in the queue. So, as long as we get whatever's on the page when the purchase is actually done, I don't think there's anything we can do about it
- The Deck was never really advertised as having x4 SSDs. Only the capacity and (to a slightly lesser extent) type (NVMe) was advertised. The mention that it was x4 was as "hidden" as the x2 one is now. So, since this detail remained consistent (e.g. they didn't try to hide it more after the change) I don't think that's breaking any rules

Aaaanway. I still think they should address this more, as a customer service. If they really care about the Valve-customer relationship, they should explain this further. Hopefully they'll do it in a new video once Q2 officially ends?

NVIDIA releases open source Linux GPU kernel modules, Beta Driver 515.43.04 out
12 May 2022 at 5:26 am UTC

I've seen this first thing after I woke up... I wasn't sure if I was still asleep or not.

Quoting: STiATFuck. I just lost 50 bucks. I did my bet that Nvidia won't release before 2025 12 years ago.

Happy it's finally happening though. Worth the 50 bucks for loosing the bet.

Since the mention Canonocal, Red Hat and Suse, it's likely that's going to be a pretty fast transition to be kernel compliant. Fast being let's say 12-18 month.

No,I do not accept bets this time ;-).
Damn, so close though! :D Still, it's a good bet to loose

Factorio improves low resolutions for Steam Deck
8 April 2022 at 11:42 am UTC

My 1000-hours megabase runs on a Ryzen 5800X with only acceptable performance. I don't see myself playing this on the Deck. And I'm not starting a new base (except when I'll hunt the remaining achievements)

GPD are getting quite desperate against the Steam Deck
6 April 2022 at 1:32 pm UTC Likes: 2

The silver lining is that... this doesn't matter. The (non-Switch) handheld market share is gonna get completely swallowed by the Deck anyway. It's just too damn cheap to compete against. That alone leaves them with no chance whatsoever.. but on top of that, people are also happy or at least mostly happy with SteamOS and even more so with the Deck's hardware.

Steam Controller & Steam Link on sale for a few days, the Link is especially cheap

The SC is an amazing piece of hardware. But I already have one :) And I wouldn't get a second one because it's quite expensive to ship to Romania (or at least it was so when I bought mine ~1 year ago)

Unfortunately, I have no use for the Link in my setup.
