GOL Game Jam Has Entered Rating Phase

By - | Views: 16,830
Submission phase for the first ever GOL Game Jam has ended and now begins the rating phase. You can now head on over to the jam page and check out all the entries and rate them based on a couple of simple metrics.

You can find the jam page here: http://itch.io/jam/gol-game-jam

In total we got 12 entries. There is actually quite a variety of different styles of games at show that use various different engines. So now all that is left to do is to get them into some kind of an order before we can declare one of the developers (or teams) a winner.

For the ratings I chose a couple of very generic metrics that are typically used to rate games they are Graphics, Sound, Gameplay and Performance/Stability. However, keep in mind that the games were developed in a week while you rate them. I hope it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that you can't create games that rival the likes of Shadow of Mordor, Metro: Last Light etc. in a week's time.

Finally, thanks to all the participants and good luck on the ratings! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I'm a Linux gamer from Finland. I like reading, long walks on the beach, dying repeatedly in roguelikes and ripping and tearing in FPS games. I also sometimes write code and sometimes that includes hobbyist game development.

Quoting: SabunSweet, I didn't know about this. I just wanted to say, I'm impressed with your platformer. I've personally tried Gdevelop and I was surprised to see you be able to do so much within a week with it. Good job :)

Aw, you're too kind, really :P <3 And it was more like what I did in a couple days, between work and other engagements (and *cough* laziness) I got like 5% of what I wanted done. What was done was pretty simple, especially since Gdevelop has some presets for platforming physics; but I thank you for the kind words all the same :)

And your game was certainly ambitious, as any 3D game done in a week sounds ambitious to this scrub, and I was also impressed with the amount of stuff you got done. If I were to put on my critique hat, however, I probably would've suggested a smaller more linear layout, like a tight corridor DOOM style shooter. After a bit I didn't see a point in venturing out for the crates surrounded by zombies to shoot said zombies; in other words, I didn't feel like I had a goal. Also the actual shooting isn't too satisfying as the zombies are pretty slow and non-threatening in an open area as well as being bullet sponges, though it does get a bit tense in the tree area.

All that said, great effort and I'll be following you to see how you future games progress :) And keep in mind this criticism comes from a lazy git who made half a level and watches too many game design videos XD

It would be nice if we had more time (like 2 weeks) to review the games.
Gets more reviews as people need to"
1) learn about the availability of rating the games now
2) find time to play the game
3) then rate them.

Great to see so many entries, I'll leave my comments and ratings on the games themselves. Don't worry if my ratings are lower, they'll be across the board (I usually never give perfect ratings unless I'm on ebay lol).

Just finished* rating. It's a shame the 12th entry dropped out, but it was still nice to see and play all the others. Very well done to all the participants!

* Not to say I won't make subtle changes as I replay each game

Your criticism is very much appreciated! Indeed I should have kept things more linear, I felt it too after walking a while I didn't feel like a I had a goal even though I knew what the goal was! :D

Great experience all the same, I'm looking forward to the next jam. I hope we can participate then too, that way we can see ourselves improve :)
