Sitting in a tent during WW2 and all you have is a map and a radio, it's time to shout some orders and hopefully win. You quite literally do shout your orders too, you need a microphone for this as it's using speech recognition.

While not a unique idea, a few others have done it, for it to be in a strategy game like this definitely is a bit more unusual. It's real-time too and as you get verbal reports back you then need to act fast and start making some decisions.

Thing is, you don't always get an accurate picture of what's going on (such is the way in war) so the information you get will be incomplete and sometimes perhaps a little confusing. You also have to deal with troops personally too with ammunition, morale, camouflage, sight and stamina all being simulated. There's a lot more going on too as terrain type will heavily influence battles, you can try and do an ambush with a small team and it will include what they say are 100s of historical photos, documents and video so you can "Learn how soldiers lived throughout the war, and gain a better understanding of their experiences.".

Developer Foolish Mortals has been working on it for a few years now, and it sounds like it's really coming together nicely with it possibly releasing next month. You can wishlist/follow it on Steam.

Been keeping an eye on this one. I thought up a zombie apocalypse game with similar mechanics a long time ago, where you manage scavenger crews, but then saw this and am now curious to see how it plays.

Huh, I thought I had seen this game but it wasn't coming to Linux, but apparently it is a different one.

This still looks very interesting, though the "speech recognition" system is a huge bummer. Even if it worked perfectly it would make playing the game quite inconvenient (you need a good mic and an environment that is quiet enough but you won't disturb anyone by talking out loud)... and it never works perfectly. Speech recognition is hardly perfect, and if you happen to have any kind of accent good luck with that. Also, localization of the game is pretty much a big nope for those that would prefer to play in another language.

It sounds very interesting but speech recognition is a big no-no in my world of cramped apartment and paper thin walls. I would annoy everyone if i played this.

But that kind of fog of war and simulation of human factors really looks interesting.

I wonder what kind of engine they’re using for cross-platform speech recognition. Linux is severely lacking in that department.

There was a strategy game a long time ago, called Waterloo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo_(video_game)
You got the information from your view (no birds-eye!), and from couriers.
You had to type all your orders; and your aides and couriers would transmit them to the commanders..

Yeah, I'm not going to shout WWII orders into a microphone here in Germany, my neighbours would probably misinterpret that...

I also already had my share of speech recognition gaming in the 90s: https://www.mobygames.com/game/virtual-corporation . That experience still leaves a terrible taste in my mouth
