I can say that about both for me. I played the original out of curiosity for the whole portal/gravity mechanics but the themes and characters were really well done. I never expected to finish it as FPS games are not really my thing, but I was hooked. It was short enough to not overstay its welcome and it left me wanting more. I know I say it all the time everywhere, but we were completely robbed when Prey 2 was cancelled.
For Prey 2017, I avoided it until just earlier this year, admittedly alot out of spite for the above, but I finally caved when it was super cheap. The opening was great,
Spoiler, click me
Going way back, I will also say Penumbra. I bought the series when they released the native versions since it looked good for a Linux game esp back then and I wanted to throw some money for the support (it was pretty cheap too IIRC). I never liked horror games, though now I think it's because so many think gore == horror, but Frictional was magic with how they had me *love* hating that game. It took me forever to make it through since I am a coward, but the rush it gave me was unmatched.

I know, there's currently only the demo available. But I was really surprised by the demo. Originally I wasn't even interested in the game. I didn't like its theme and artwork. But after playing the demo I totally changed my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am now looking forward for the full release.
Pity though, that there isn't a Linux version this time.
